Pakistan rejects Amnesty's call for investigation into air strike on Kabul rehabilitation centre
The human rights group says the attack amounts to a war crime, but Pakistan dismissed the allegations today, claiming the operation was a lawful act of self-defence. Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi told a news briefing in Islamabad that Pakistan “completely rejects the allegations,” saying it was “unfortunate” that such serious claims had been made “without any credible evidence.”

Split in Turkish opposition CHP becomes official: Özgür Özel announces new party
At least 80 of the CHP’s 135 deputies and the elected provincial chairs of 74 of the country’s 81 provinces attended the meeting. The founding petition of the new party is expected to be submitted to the Interior Ministry in the coming days. This will formalize the de facto split within the main opposition party since May 21, when a court, exceeding the limits of its jurisdiction, removed the CHP’s elected leadership through a ruling of “absolute nullity” and reinstated the former leadership of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

Yemen's Houthi rebels attack two Saudi oil tankers in Red Sea as US bombs Iran for 12th night
The Houthis’ Saba news agency said today that their forces had struck two tankers, the Encelia and the Layla, in the Red Sea the day before, sparking fires on both. That would be the first reported Yemeni attack on a vessel since the Houthis announced a blockade of Saudi-linked shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait earlier this week in retaliation for the autocratic kingdom’s blockade of Yemen and a recent attack on the international airport in the capital Sanaa.

Rights groups sue France over failure to stop corporate support for Israel’s occupation
The organisations want the court to order the French government to introduce effective regulatory and enforcement measures restricting trade, investment and other commercial activities that help sustain Israel’s illegal occupation. The defendants include the French prime minister and ministers responsible for the economy, foreign affairs and commerce. Lawyers Henri Thulliez, Yacine Baita and Frédéric Thiriez represent the applicants, who are also advised by the Open Society Justice Initiative.

Guatemala races to save 60,000 case files of testimony about abuses during armed conflict
Under the last two presidents, Jimmy Morales and Alejandro Giammattei, the reparations program was largely abandoned, and Giammattei ordered it to be shut down with no provisions to preserve the testimonies contained. Arévalo has sought to revive efforts to preserve evidence of past abuses from the armed conflict and provide reparations, including launching the first national registry of people who disappeared during that time.

Suspension of political parties seeks to undermine Ecuador’s largest opposition force, warn critics
Last week, Ecuador’s Contentious-Electoral Tribunal (TCE) decided to temporarily suspend the AMIGO political party, thereby barring it from participating in the upcoming local elections to be held on November 29, 2026. Why? According to the body, it upheld a complaint filed by the prosecutor in charge, Carlos Alarcón, regarding alleged money laundering by party leaders, although the bulk of the evidence has been classified as confidential.

Children relapsing into malnutrition has become an increasingly common occurrence in the state and across northern Nigeria, according to local health and aid workers, who cite knock-on effects from the Iran war. Two Russian men jailed in Angola for terrorism and spying
Angolan prosecutors said Lakshtanov and Ratchin wanted to influence next year’s presidential elections, including by funding Angola’s largest opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), or by forcing a leadership change within the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has ruled the country since independence from Portugal in 1975. Prosecutors also claimed the men were linked to Africa Politology, a Russian disinformation and propaganda network that emerged from the Wagner mercenary group.

Democrats say Social Security boss’ message pushed misleading statements on Trump tax law’s benefits
The New Deal-era program carries significant weight with voters, millions of whom rely on it, making talk of cutting benefits unpopular. Adding to the potency of the issue is the program’s looming funding shortfall. Democrats and Republicans are competing this November for control of the narrowly divided House, with the Senate increasingly in play, injecting an incentive for both sides to press their advantages.

Alaska sends 3,000 letters asking voters to verify their citizenship ahead of this year’s elections
The Alaska letter asks recipients to affirm their citizenship status via letter, phone or email, and Beecher said the division is not requiring paperwork or documentation. Those who receive the letter are moved to a list of “inactive” voters. If the division doesn’t hear back from the recipient, they still would be able to cast a special kind of ballot that also requires voters to attest to their qualifications to vote, she said.

‘Underhanded’ Stevens Sends Out Fake El-Sayed Press Release Claiming He’s Endorsed by Their GOP Opponent
“ENDORSEMENT ALERT: Mike Rogers Endorses Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic US Senate Primary,” the email says, beneath an “Abdul for Senate” graphic identical to the one used in his campaign communications. The email quotes Rogers, a former Republican US congressman expected to be the GOP Senate nominee, saying he wants to face El-Sayed in the general election because he’d be easier to beat than Stevens. “If he wins, I think we’re in good shape,” it quotes Rogers saying. “I think we’ll do well if he in fact is the nominee.”

Repression Intensifies in Bolivia with Arrest of Prominent Peasant Leaders
On Saturday, July 17, one month after the government in Bolivia declared a state of emergency, right-wing president Rodrigo Paz arrested movement leaders David Mamani, of the Tupac Katari Federation, who was in hiding, and David Quispe Machaca, of the Unified Confederation of Peasant Workers (CSUTCB). The government has accused both leaders of “terrorism.” This is the same argument the government uses to criminalize and persecute those who mobilized during the more than 50 days of blockades. La Izquierda Diario (Left Voice’s sister site in Bolivia) demands freedom for David Quispe, David Mamani, Vicente Salazar, and all those detained during the May and June mobilizations! Strikingly, following these arrests, the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) quickly published its call for dialogue with the government of Rodrigo Paz. Not only that, but the commission for reviewing and monitoring judicial processes is no longer even included in these discussions. It’s important to remember that the Paz government was able to impose the state of emergency thanks to the betrayal of COB leader, Mario Argollo and the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the COB, through their signing of an agreement on June 19. These new arrests come amid the escalating persecution that the Paz government is carrying our, thanks to the impunity afforded by the state of emergency. To date, the La Paz Departmental Prosecutor’s Office itself has reported that 114 criminal cases have been opened, 75 of which were initiated ex officio.

Marco Rubio and the Myth of the “Communist Refugee”
Fox News host Martha MacCallum recently interviewed New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) co-chair Gustavo Gordillo, clashing over whether the DSA’s platform is “anti-American” and challenging Gordillo’s immigrant roots. MacCallum reminded Gordillo that his family left Peru, suggesting their reasons might be related to the communist uprising led by the Shining Path and not, as Gordillo claims, related to U.S. imperialism. MacCallum contrasted this by discussing Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Cuban immigrant family’s embrace of American capitalism, weaponizing it against Gordillo’s embrace of socialist policies. She then played a clip of Rubio’s opening remarks at the recent Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, where he attempted to debunk the myth that communism sounds good in theory but is bad in practice. “Communism does not sound good in theory,” Rubio said. “The world it envisions for all of us is small, flat, grey, leveled of all exception, drained of all that is good and noble in the human soul.” Is that so? Let’s subject that claim to the cold light of historical reality.
