I understand a regular strike; you deprive a corporation of income and customers until they meet your demands. Makes perfect sense. But what does a hunger strike accomplish? You're doing the equivalent of holding your breath until your parents do what you want, except the parents in this metaphor don't give a shit if you die.

It seems like a completely infantile form of strike that would never produce any results, and yet there are numerous historical examples of it being used by even prominent political figures, let alone the cattle class. What's going on here?

Why don't you utilize a search engine, deploy a bit of effort into learning, it will be good for you.

>Um every question anyone has ever had about any topic has already been answered objectively, there's no merit to further discussion of anything actually you fucking idiot. This entire board is actually completely redundant you moron. Why aren't you asking ChatGPT you absolute cretin fucking stupid retard dumbass.

Hunger strikes are able to bring about attention to criminal negligence (abusing people in prison) or political activism. An warden or guard can be charged if a prisoner dies from it too. Hunger strikes are also commonly assoited with fasting, india is an example of this having a monk or religious leader go on a hunger strike usually rallies people around them and if the governmemt continues to not give in it becomes very public.

Around 75.5% of all hunger strikes are succeful (although not fully usually), prison hunger strikes are 48% doe.

Ah, so it's mainly a religious thing outside of prisons? That explains a lot. I'm surprised prison staff get in any trouble from starving prisoners though, given how much abuse is normalized. Thank you for the insight.

It draws attention, which was of more value historically than now where the world is full of distractions and politicians realise they can just ignore the public.
It can compel action of some kind which can kick-start a PR feedback loop. e.g. the suffragette hunger strikers put the government in a bind where they couldn't let women starve themselves to death (bad PR) but also couldn't really feed them (they tried force feeding them through their noses, this was a PR disaster) culminating in the government legislating to allow itself to temporarily release prisoners for ill health and then re-arrest them. (this was also, also terrible PR.) The net effect of this, as well as forcing the issue, was to accelerate the collapse of the then-governing Liberal party in favour of Labour. (WW1 then intervened, but limited women's suffrage was granted at the end of it, followed by equal suffrage in 1928.)

It can also galvanise your own movement by showing the depth of your commitment. e.g. look at the rise of Sinn Fein following the 1981 hunger strikes and eventual compromise in the form of the Good Friday Agreement and, more prosaically, quiet concession to the demands the strikers had made. (Ironically the early consensus was that the government won because it stood its ground and let the hunger strikers die, but this was a tactical victory and a strategic loss, since it strengthened Irish Republicans as a whole.)

All non violent protests that arent literal strikes are PR stunts, except hunger strikes are hardcore, arguably more so than suiciding yourself because it's a slow death and shows absolute determination

Martyrdom is a very useful political tool

Comrades,

The revolutionary movement has always understood a truth that the imperialist mind cannot grasp, when a conscious revolutionary with a mass movement behind them approaches the final threshold of life, it does not signal defeat it ignites a chain reaction of liberated energy that shakes the foundations of the oppressor's order.

History provides us with irrefutable examples. When Comrade Bobby Sands and his heroic Irish republican comrades faced the imperialist gallows of British captivity, their conscious decision to sacrifice their physical bodies for the cause did not end their struggle it detonated it. Mass riots erupted, coordinated attacks were launched, and all sects of the Irish left and republican forces united in righteous fury. The same revolutionary phenomenon occurred when Greek anarchist comrades undertook their principled hunger strike against the bourgeois anti-leftist prisons, the masses responded in support with militant action, with street battles, with the unmistakable eruption of collective revolutionary will.

This is not coincidence. This is dialectics of human consciousness. This is the science of revolutionary consciousness in motion.

The Juche idea teaches us that consciousness is not an abstraction or divorce from Marxist materialism, it is a real, material force. Human consciousness, when forged through struggle, when tempered by the fires of class conflict, becomes a tangible weapon. Energy is real. The energy of the conscious worker, the energy of the revolutionary fighter, the energy of the masses united in a single purpose, this energy accumulates, concentrates, and when released, it transforms the objective conditions of struggle.

When a conscious revolutionary nears death, that accumulated energy does not dissipate. It is transferred. It activates. It "opens up the breach for future energies" The martyrdom of a single revolutionary, fully conscious of their role in history, fully aware that their physical body is the last weapon they possess, serves as a catalyst. Their sacrifice is immortalized, and it focuses the scattered energy of the masses, crystallizes the contradictions of the system, and transforms passive sympathy into active combatancy.

This is the revolutionary dialectic at its most potent, when forced into a corner, the conscious worker who chooses martyrdom over submission does not abandon the struggle, they become its most powerful engine. Their conscious sacrifice becomes the spark that ignites the combustible material of mass discontent. One comrade's principled stand can produce thousands of new combatants. Their revolutionary energy, once concentrated in a single body, multiplies exponentially as it is absorbed by the masses.

In the Juche tradition, we understand that the revolutionary is never alone. The individual revolutionary is an organic part of the collective, and their consciousness is inseparable from the consciousness of the masses. Strong empowered individuals can contribute to the collective with greater force. When a revolutionary martyr falls, the masses rise behind them. They rise with the energy of the martyred, drawing strength from the example set before them. Thousands become tens of thousands. Tens of thousands become millions. The energy of one becomes the energy of many. Those who haven't yet studied the highest form of Marxist-Leninism, which is Juche, will assume this is metaphysics, but in reality, even the US army counter-insurgency manual admits this function when discussing their issues with controlling Afghanistan.

Is starving yourself really that hardcore? I once went a couple weeks without eating and I wasn't even protesting anything. Maybe I just can't relate enough to the gluttonous nature of the average Joe to properly appreciate hunger strikes.

Big difference between anorexia, fasting, and hunger strike, intention being the main one

>>2875422
It's also enjoyable now that it's broadcasted online for whoever you're protesting against, they can enjoy your slow deterioration every day while they enjoy their breakfast

>>2875534
The point is to bring attention, if you're not the only one watching then they're succeeding
