Fire erupts on ships at Egypt’s Damietta port
The Reuters news agency, citing British maritime security company Ambrey, reported that a US-owned floating storage tanker at the port had been hit by a drone. Crew members were evacuated, and the fire was brought under control, the report said. There has not been any claim of responsibility. The incident comes as US President Donald Trump promised to hit Iran “hard” following a wave of Iranian missile attacks targeting US bases in the region and US-Saudi Arabia joint attacks on a Tehran-backed armed group in Iraq, which killed at least 20 fighters.

Ahmet Davutoglu, former PM turned Erdogan critic, ends political career
“This is not a decision of surrender. It is a decision to distance ourselves morally. This is not giving up on politics; it is a call for everyone to rethink politics,” he said. He warned that the introduction of the executive presidential system in 2018 had eliminated checks and balances and accelerated authoritarianism, which “could give way to a permanent authoritarian system.” Davutoglu founded the Future Party in 2019, hoping to draw voters away from Erdogan's long-time ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and create an alternative conservative movement with democratic credentials.

Many migrants continue to become victims
Human trafficking has become so deeply entrenched in overseas migration that, according to rights activists, Bangladeshi workers are now being trafficked in nearly every destination country after being lured by false promises of decent jobs. Upon entry, many trafficked workers are stripped of their passports and phones, confined to workplaces, and forced into labour, criminal activities, or worse.

Inside Greece’s Refugee Camps, Gender-Based Violence Is Built Into the System
In 2020, the Greek government introduced mandatory registration for organizations seeking to operate inside the camps. The process — costly and discretionary — effectively pushed out most independent groups, forcing them to work on the margins of the system. The result has been a double vacuum: fewer services for camp residents, and less independent monitoring of what happens inside. This is not an accident. The current structure of refugee camps in Greece took shape with the EU’s hotspot approach, introduced in 2015 in response to arrivals by sea from Turkey. Originally designed as spaces for rapid identification and processing on the Aegean islands, hotspots gradually became containment facilities. In 2016, the closure of borders by Macedonia, Croatia, and Slovenia left tens of thousands of people stranded in Greece, giving authorities a pretext to set up what were framed as emergency structures but have since become permanent.

Unison’s new left leadership: A balance sheet so far
Earlier this year, Andrea Egan was voted in as general secretary of Unison. Consequently, Britain’s largest union has a left-winger as leader for the first time in its history. This development brims with potential. Unison’s bureaucracy has consistently acted as an agent of the ruling class within the labour movement, holding back the class struggle in Britain at every major juncture. The union, indeed, possesses a vast apparatus, thoroughly tied to the top of the Labour Party, which has acted to put the brakes on every move towards industrial action – not only by its own rank and file, but across the trade union movement. A left-wing Unison leadership – acting in the interests of grassroots members, and not of the employers and establishment – would therefore be an important step forward for the entire workers’ movement. Egan’s election, meanwhile, could not have come at a better time: one of deepening crisis for British capitalism and its representatives, and of massive anger within the ranks of the working class.

Marxistindia, Condemn Unconstitutional and Authoritarian Blocking of BitChat
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly condemns the BJP government's unconstitutional and authoritarian decision to block the open-source messaging application BitChat. This action marks yet another dangerous escalation in the government's assault on democratic rights, freedom of expression and the right of citizens to peacefully organise and communicate. What is particularly alarming is that no official notification or public order was issued by the Government of India. The country came to know of this censorship only through a public post by Jack Dorsey, whose team develops BitChat. Such secretive censorship, carried out without transparency or public accountability, is wholly incompatible with the norms of a constitutional democracy.
