Milei signs decree allowing Argentina to bar or expel foreigners over 'hate speech'
The government did not specify particular incidents in the decree, but the references appear to relate to an alleged wave of anti-Argentina abuse that intensified during the recent FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, particularly on social media. Congress must approve the validity of the measure, which remains in force while the legislative process is under way, though experts warned it could open the door to arbitrary enforcement.

Seattle police chief resigns under pressure from mayor over response to festival shooting
Mayor Katie Wilson’s announcement followed hours of speculation about whether Police Chief Shon Barnes would step down, as some of his supporters said he had rebuffed Wilson’s request to resign. Wilson said she was appointing Deputy Chief Andre Sayles, a law enforcement veteran with more than two decades of experience, as interim chief. Barnes told The Seattle Times earlier Thursday that whether he remained as chief was “up to the mayor.” He said he was off for the day and spending time with family.

The Right vs. the Right: Conservative “Liberals” in the Age of Trump
Before the last presidential election, Adolph Reed Jr. argued that “electoral politics has captured too much of the political imagination of the American left—or, at least, of those occupying the cultural space that a left would if there were one in this country.” Reed lamented the culturally dominant “sensibility that approaches politics as largely performative, a theater for the expression of righteousness, or bearing witness for justice and against injustice.” As many radicals long predicted, this approach to politics has handed the whole of the national political conversation to the right, and this development will plague American society long after Trump is a memory. We’ve reached a point where Bill Kristol can be a featured speaker at a “liberal” conference. It’s hard, in this context, to know which way is up, yet we can see clearly that all ways now point rightward. Kristol is far from alone; this cottage industry includes a who’s who of bloody-handed, Bush-era conservatives who now pretend to care about the rule of law, when their whole careers were spent writing thin apologies for the many constitutional violations of the post-9/11 years. We would not be in this moment with MAGA lawlessness and authoritarianism were it not for the people behind The Bulwark, the Lincoln Project, and the various other groups and outlets that have emerged on the right since Trump.

Power beneath the surface: Mining, politics and the Marcos dev’t agenda
For Indigenous peoples in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, there is no justice in Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s ‘just’ energy transition. Growing up in the fertile rice fields of the province, Bugkalot-Ilongot resident Zesirie Enggo chose to till the same land that had sustained generations of their community. On sunny days before, she recalled, a single hectare of their rice field could yield up to 100 sacks of palay. Yet, as several mining corporations — FCF Minerals Corporation, Oceana Gold Philippines Inc. and now North Luzon Mineral Resources Corporation (NLMRC) — take interest in the richness of their mountains and soil, their lives, livelihood and means of subsistence absorb the blow. A hundred sacks quickly turned into 55 to 57 sacks, which she said would cost about P27,000 (US$437.27) every harvest, depending on the market price of rice. When the rains come, the harvest dwindles further, sometimes leaving their families with only enough rice for their own table and none to sell. This decline in production, Enggo said, stemmed from the loss of irrigation as water from their rivers fell into a dry spell due to mining activities. Without a steady water supply, once-productive rice fields became increasingly difficult to cultivate, shrinking harvests and threatening the farming livelihood of Indigenous communities in Nueva Vizcaya. As it became harder to earn, Enggo said other residents chose to test their fate overseas or in lowland Manila. “The development they [mining corporations] promised — roads, infrastructure, job opportunities — were not fulfilled,” Enggo said. “Agriculture is our primary source of livelihood, and now we are once again being disrupted by a third mining corporation… We hope there will be no more mining projects and that these mining companies will leave, because I know that mining is not the only way a community can achieve progress,” she added.

Erik Houdini: Pokémon Go was used to train drones that kill innocent men, women, and children for profit.
Basically, every child born after 1990 has interacted with Pokemon in some capacity. Millennial kids played the original Red and Blue, Generation Z played on the Nintendo DS/3DS, Gen Alpha played on the Switch, and everyone played Pokémon Go. Even if it was only for a few months when it was trendy and popular, it was something that got a lot of people outside, connecting with each other, showing up at different places, and sparking conversations with strangers. It was a cool and interesting moment in our cultural malaise. Basically, every child born after 1990 has interacted with Pokemon in some capacity.
