‘Danger no longer only comes from the hitmen, but from the state’: the Honduran farmers labelled terrorists for protecting their land
Located in north-eastern Honduras, the Bajo Aguán valley is a fertile region that has been the country’s hub for palm oil production – the ubiquitous ingredient used in everything from shampoo to instant noodles. It has also been the site of a bitter 30-year conflict over land, involving small-scale farmers, or campesinos, large palm oil corporations backed by the government, and drug-trafficking groups.

Hungary faces energy crunch as drought shuts down Paks nuclear plant, PM says
“Due to the further drop in the Danube’s water level,” Magyar wrote Saturday, “tomorrow it will be completely shut down for the first time in 44 years." The Soviet-built Paks facility remains the backbone of the country’s power system. The loss of output has triggered national energy-saving measures and offers of support from regional neighbors. A prolonged outage would cripple Hungary’s electricity supply at a time when temperatures are forecast to rise above 40 degrees Celsius in Budapest next week amid an ongoing heatwave and drought across Europe.

Comparing Israel to Nazi regime is not a criminal offense, German court rules
Citing her right to freedom of speech, a higher regional court in the southwestern city of Zweibruckem has acquitted her of any wrongdoing, according to the report published earlier this week. According to the court, the criminal offense of using symbols of unconstitutional organizations is not fulfilled if someone uses the symbols to sharp criticize the state of Israel’s methods and thereby clearly distances herself from or condemns Nazi-era injustices.

'They want to make us leave': Israel destroys West Bank wells serving Palestinian herders
Days after Israeli forces destroyed three of the Palestinian community's main water wells, residents are scrambling to secure enough water for their families, crops and animals in one of the occupied West Bank's driest regions. For 60-year-old Ali Bani Odeh, the destruction of the wells was more than merely the loss of infrastructure. A father of four and grandfather of 14, he has spent decades farming and raising livestock to support his family in Ras al-Ahmar.

As De la Espriella takes office, his US-backed security policy for Colombia is raising questions
As part of those plans, the president-elect has promised to implement a “Plan Patriota remixed”, an allusion to highly aggressive US-backed military operations against armed groups under then-President Alvaro Uribe in 2003. Uribe’s allies to this day hail Plan Patriota as a great success that forced the FARC to the negotiating table in 2016. Critics, however, point to rampant human and civil rights violations, including working with paramilitary forces to kill thousands of civilians and frame them as guerrilla fighters to increase casualty counts.

Democratic US states sue to challenge Trump's latest tariffs
The states' lawsuit filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York follows previous challenges by small U.S. businesses, which sued to block the tariffs on the day they went into effect last month. States and small businesses have successfully challenged previous global tariffs imposed by Trump in his second term, but the president has continued to pursue new tariffs despite a series of legal setbacks.

Federal judge blocks New York’s ban on ICE agents wearing masks
D’Agostino’s 51-page preliminary ruling let stand a new state prohibition on 287(g) cooperation agreements between local police departments and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Newsom shows fundraising muscle for state parties
Gavin Newsom is quietly banking a lot of goodwill among party organizers and elected officials in states — particularly in the South — that will be key in the midterms and the 2028 Democratic presidential primary. Newsom has raised more than $1.7 million for critical state parties and their legislative committees so far this two-year cycle, according to data reviewed by Axios.

Centrist Democrats Keep Making Awful Health Reform Proposals
As the start of the 2028 Democratic presidential primary nears, various policy institutions will offer up health care proposals for candidates to adopt. One such organization, the Searchlight Institute, jumped the gun a few months ago when it released Making Health Care More Available, a package of reforms headlined by a proposal to make primary care free for everyone. Overall, I find the Searchlight Institute’s proposal to be generally overstated in its significance and quite strange and cruel in its particulars.

Capitalism Fans the Flames of the Climate Crisis
More than 900 wildfires have been raging across Canada, primarily in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwestern Ontario, and Saskatchewan. In Northwestern Ontario, where nearly 200 fires have been burning, community members have reported thick air, the constant smell of a campfire, and ash falling from the sky. Last Monday, July 13, a freight train was engulfed in flames, and workers had to request an emergency rescue. Smoke from the wildfires has poured over the Canadian border, with dense clouds hanging over cities in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. There have also been more than a dozen fires in the northern state of Minnesota due to extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds.

How Europe Betrayed Leftwing Spain Over Ceuta
I’ll go to my grave believing that, before Thursday last week, few outside the Sporcle elite could point to the North-African Spanish exclave of Ceuta on a map. That lack of knowledge was all to the good of the European right. Relying on a little public ignorance, they spun a short-lived and potentially orchestrated civilian incursion into yet another code-red threat to civilisation as we know it. But don’t get distracted by those dangerous games. It’s the deranged response to the event by governments across Europe that shows how powerful the right has become across the continent. Over the weekend, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf travelled to Ceuta. In the spirit of ‘every crisis is an opportunity’, he wasted no time posting a video sprinkled with claims I can’t verify. “We saw some of them maraud through town overnight,” he said, speaking of the roughly 60,000 mostly men who swam five kilometres around the Moroccan coast to reach the city on Thursday. “We saw them loot shops, we saw them terrorise locals,” he continued. There have been no credible reports of looting or marauding. Vehicles were torched, but in Findeq, a border town in Morocco. Some Ceuta locals may have been understandably terrified when the city’s population suddenly increased by 75%, but, again, there’s no evidence anyone was terrorised. There were, however, fatalities. At least 72 Moroccans have been reported killed in their attempt to cross the border, crushed or drowned in the rush.

>Leftwing Spain

News anon, I love you, but check yo shit on this one. Spain is not leftwing, and PSOE is far from socialist even though the word is part of its name. It's the Spanish equivalent of the the labour party of England, only more generally succdem in discourse and aesthetic and in some aspects of foreign policy, mainly for show.

But PSOE is responsible for more than half of all privatizations of Spanish SOEs, and prominent party leaders have held high positions in private companies involved in this process, such as the energy and banking sector, after their political career. So dont get fooled, they are neoliberal scum all the way, only slightly less shitty than their right wing counterparts
