The Hamas leadership knew what the consequences would be, yet they pursued their course anyway. They understood that Israel was winning and that it was normalizing its relationships with the Arab world. In time the Palestinians people would have been pushed aside politically and culturally.
The attack, the suffering, and everything that followed were the pursuit of the ultimate act of propaganda of the dead. It was never about winning. it was about showing the world the subhumanity of Israel. They sacrificed their own people, their sons and themselves. The strength to do it and the will to carry it through are something sacred.
In Catholicism they are known as Victim Souls.
