For decades, the American left has been shackled to a single, bankrupt horizon in Washington, D.C. Organizers obsess over national platforms and federal victories, mistaking national electoral politics for political power. But the U.S. is a continental anomaly, immense, balkanized, and culturally fractured to a degree that makes its regions feel like foreign nations to one another. The media industrial complex exploits this chasm, fueling a rural-urban culture war where cities are caricatured as dens of evil and the heartland is written off as backward territory. The result is total fragmentation neither side sees the other as human; they are merely exoticized threats or alien enemies.
Yet while the federal government sharpens its knives against urban centers, it reveals its own vulnerability. A sharp, highly dialectical vanguard doesn't need to win the whole country, it needs to win a region. With bold, creative organizing, a contiguous bloc stretching from the Northeast's major metros to the West Coast could declare a socialist republic in earnest. That is the strategic frontier. National elections are useless, regional sovereignty is the terrain where victory is actually achievable. This is the opening. A disciplined, dialectically trained vanguard doesn't need the White House. With creativity, select politicians and organizers could consolidate the Northeast, link up with the West Coast, and establish a socialist republic across a contiguous region. That is where the real struggle lies, in the radical act of regional liberation. If NYC’s administration say, a certain left leaning mayor, explicitly refuses to cooperate with federal deportation orders, housing mandates, or policing directives, the reaction is not incremental. It could be a switch-flip.
The federal government imposes a de facto domestic sanctions regime on the five boroughs. Federal payroll taxes are diverted. Social Security and Medicare payments are frozen. Arrests will be targeting not just undocumented residents, but any city employee, activist, or official who facilitates the "far left takeover". Mass detention, or the arrest and deportation of the mayor himself could trigger something this nation has never witnessed on its soil.
Here is the theoretical crux, this level of federal retaliation does not suppress resistance it dissolves the mediating institutions that normally absorb political conflict. The courts are bypassed. The state legislature is sidelined. The media becomes a propaganda organ for the siege. When the federal government treats a city as a hostile foreign territory, it does something profoundly self-defeating, it legitimizes the very sovereignty it denies.
Why? Because a city of 8 million people cannot be administered through coercion alone. The logistical requirements to arrest, process, feed, and guard that many people, while also managing transit, waste, water, and electricity exceed the federal capacity for sustained occupation. Public unions would likely refuse orders. Utility workers stay home. The city becomes ungovernable in response to the reactionary attack on their mayor.
This is where the situation transcends "resistance" and becomes revolutionary in the strict Marxist sense, the federal state has made the existing legal order irrelevant, while simultaneously revealing its own inability to exercise positive control over the urban core. What emerges is a dual-power scenario, by necessity if not direct intent driven organization. mass arrests do not intimidate; they create martyrs and swell the ranks of the de facto militant workers.
The revolutionary insight is not that the city "wins" in the traditional military sense. It cannot outfight the Pentagon. The insight is that the federal state cannot win a war of attrition against a dense, self-organizing, internally integrated urban population without resorting to total annihilation, which is politically and globally untenable. The siege becomes a stalemate, but a stalemate in which the federal government has lost its claim to legitimacy over that territory.
The federal reaction, if it reaches this height, forces a strategic pivot that many on the left have avoided, the abandonment of federal ballot-box politics as the primary horizon. When Washington can sanction a city, arrest its leaders, and sever its supply lines, electoral reform is finally totally dead in the eyes of the worker. The only remaining question is organizational defense.
A dedicated, dialectically sharpened vanguard must think in terms of regional self-sufficiency not secessionist fantasy, but material preparedness. Food storage, alternative energy grids, independent communication infrastructure, and neighborhood defense councils, are all things marxists should be building.
The Gaza analogy is uncomfortable but structurally apt, you can be liberated from internal occupation and simultaneously imprisoned by external blockade. The revolutionary project, therefore, is not merely to declare autonomy, but to build the inter-regional, an inter-city linkages that make the siege of the federal government less impactful, or unenforceable.
The reactionary federal state, in its bid to crush dissident cities, does not simply repress, it catalyzes. It forces the opposition to confront the fundamental contradiction of American political life, the nation is too balkanized and too vast for unitary federal control, yet too centralized in its economic arteries to permit easy secession. The coming crisis will not be resolved by lawsuits or primaries, friends. It will be resolved by which side has organically built the infrastructure, physical, social, and psychological to endure the coming rupture.

When the federal state overreaches, when it deploys SWAT teams into residential neighborhoods, when it mass-arrests community leaders, when it severs food and medical supply lines it does not intimidate; it activates. The material threat to survival forces the creation of autonomous formations, reactionary forces get too bold, or even when the rumor of their boldness spreads, armed formations appear organically in response. That is the American pattern now.
I don't know where the rest of you are sitting, comrades but let me tell you what the ground actually looks like in urban America. One morning, I walked out onto my own porch and found twenty armed federal agents fanning out across my block. They walked straight up, shined lights in my face, and demanded my ID. Just for sitting there. On my own stoop. Then on social media, the tvs, the papers, I am sitting there watching reactionary media speak of my city as a foreign land requiring occupation and culling. When a population is treated as hostile foreigners in their own homes, when federal agents patrol residential streets as if they were occupied territory, the psychological contract between state and citizen is severed. The federal government does not need to "declare martial law" in a formal sense; it has already normalized the performative occupation of urban spaces, and soon, they will be doing the real thing, with the specific intent of "stopping the radical left". The media war drum has already done its work, half the country already views NYC and cities alike as an alien entity that must be disciplined or reclaimed. We know what the task is.
