Solidere, the company that rebuilt Beirut, seeks another generation
The cabinet is expected to consider on Friday a request by the Lebanese Company for the Development and Reconstruction of Beirut Central District, better known as Solidere, to amend its mandate to 75 years from its final incorporation in the 90s, effectively extending its lifespan until 2069. The proposal has reignited one of Lebanon's oldest post-war disputes, pitting promises of investment and unfinished reconstruction against accusations that the company had outlived its original purpose while continuing to benefit from exceptional privileges.

UNICEF says one child killed per day in Gaza since ‘ceasefire’
At least 300 children have been killed in Gaza in the roughly 300 days since a so-called “ceasefire” was announced on October 10, 2025 – an average of one child a day, the United Nations children’s agency says. Hundreds more have been wounded, many severely, UNICEF said in a statement on Thursday as it pressed parties to a proposed US-led peace plan to translate pledges into action.

White Nile traders strike over rising fees as Port Sudan faces water and power crisis
The strike followed a call by the city’s Chamber of Commerce to close the market through Wednesday. Traders said the new fees were placing an unsustainable financial burden on businesses and would ultimately push up the prices of goods and services. Trader Awad El Tom told Radio Dabanga that the strike achieved “100 per cent” participation, with traders demanding that the locality review the new charges.

Leftwing Councils Pledge to Defy Transphobic Code on Single-Sex Spaces
“We won’t put our staff in the impossible position of policing entry to public spaces,” wrote the council leaders. “We have an unshakeable commitment to ensuring that trans+ residents can access services safely, with dignity and free from discrimination or harassment,” they added. Islington council leader Una O’Halloran said that the new EHRC code is “contradictory, poorly developed and risks creating a climate of suspicion of trans people”.

Trump signs orders to limit US birthright citizenship, despite Supreme Court ruling
Limiting birthright citizenship has been one of the top priorities in the Republican president's ‌crackdown on immigration, with the White House taking particular aim at what it calls "birth tourism," in which pregnant foreigners travel to the U.S. to give birth. After his June 30 setback in the Supreme Court, Trump called on Congress to act, but on Thursday he opted for executive orders, which set policy but are not legally binding. The court said Trump's earlier effort to restrict birthright citizenship was unconstitutional.

Manhattan UPS workers sleep in cafeteria, wander streets overnight under split-shift regime
The arrangement compels long-time full-time workers to perform a four-hour Twilight shift ending around 10:30 p.m., wait five or six unpaid hours, then return for a four-hour Preload shift beginning around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. For many workers who commute an hour and a half each way, the interval is too short to travel home, eat, sleep and return.

Tudeh Party of Iran, "Endless War" and the Perilous Future Facing Iran and the Middle East
Classic wars often begin when they have clearly stated political goals, in addition to economic benefits for the military-industrial complex and usually end when one side achieves all or a significant part of those goals or considers continuing the war futile and unprofitable. However, what is unfolding today between Iran, the US, and Israel bears little resemblance to such classical wars. Rather than a conventional military confrontation, it is increasingly an example of "unlimited" and multilateral warfare that blurs the boundaries between the battlefield, the economy, politics, and national security. Such a wide-ranging conflict is no longer simply a war of missiles and aircraft. Economic sanctions, intelligence operations, cyberattacks, psychological warfare, targeted assassinations, the wanton destruction of civilian infrastructure, and diplomatic pressure have all become integrated instruments of a single conflict. Unlike the wars of previous centuries, moreover, the objective of contemporary warfare is not necessarily the conquest of territory and resources, but rather the gradual erosion of a state's capacity to govern and administer the country. To a considerable extent, what we are witnessing in Iran today conforms to precisely this pattern.

The End of “Learn to Code” Economics
The “Learn to Code” movement in the early 2010s encouraged people to learn computer programming in an economy increasingly reliant on technology. Many students chose computer science majors and workers enrolled in coding bootcamps, all because they were sold on the idea that it provided a stable future. This was fueled by the rapid growth of technology companies and their demand for software engineers. For two decades, Learn to Code reflected the needs of capital. But when in crisis, capital seeks new avenues for profit. What was once touted as one of the best careers to pursue, now has some of the highest unemployment rates while tech companies are making record-breaking profits. “Learn to Code” reminds us that labor does not move independently of capital. As the industry is shifting, we are seeing the end of “Learn to Code.”

Press Opinion Treats US Devastation of Cuba as Reason for More Devastation
The energy blockade that the Trump administration has imposed on Cuba is hammering the island. As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk (UN News, 6/8/26) recently pointed out: "The fuel restrictions imposed since early 2026 and recent tightening of extraterritorial sanctions, taken together, are directly harming Cubans, especially the most vulnerable. Children are dying because doctors lack access to essential medical supplies and medicines…. These sanctions must be lifted immediately." Broad swaths of the US media’s chattering class have taken a different angle, suggesting that the Cuban government is the primary—if not the sole—cause of the pain being inflicted on the country. The function of such propaganda is to justify the US’s economic warfare: If the Cuban government can’t run the country, the logic goes, then the US is right to try and bring it down. It’s the same narrative pushed by US officials and Cubans in exile, who together constitute the large majority of sources in news coverage of Cuba from prominent US outlets, as a recent FAIR study (7/15/26) showed. Much of the US commentariat is also pretending that the Cuban revolution’s extraordinary achievements have not occurred. Acknowledging them would, of course, get in the way of the narrative that Cuban leaders are so malign and incompetent that the US is obligated to bring about a counter revolution.
