Dominican Republic’s expulsion of Cuban officials sparks geopolitical tension
In recent months, several conservative Latin American countries, including Colombia and Ecuador, have cut relations or closed their embassies in Cuba while proclaiming their political alignment with Trump. Cuba’s Foreign Ministry reacted that the expulsion involved 10 officials — not nine as the Dominicans had stated — and expressed regret over the decision by Dominican President Luis Abinader.

Canadian plasma clinics pause collections after deaths of two donors
On the same day, the agency had issued a formal notice of non-compliance for failure to follow blood regulations, a senior official told the Globe and Mail newspaper. The donors, both of whom were in the province of Manitoba, went into “distress” while donating, people familiar with the cases said.

Labour divided over indefinite leave to remain
Since May 2025, the Labour government has been preparing sweeping changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain status. The Home Office is set to replace the standard five-year route to achieving permanent residence with an ‘earned settlement’ model. For migrants classified as low or mid-skilled workers the route could be extended to 10 or 15 years. People who came to Britain under one set of rules are being forced to adhere to a new set that will make workers more dependent on employers.

US threatens EU over its green reporting rules
The U.S. on Friday threatened action against the EU unless Brussels reins in its environmental and human rights rules, which Washington says unfairly burden American companies. Acknowledging Brussels had made “some positive reforms,” Washington said the EU had “failed to fully address U.S. concerns,” and that it “will take any actions necessary to address unreasonable burdens on U.S. commerce.”

Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO
Mangione, 28, said he made a gun with the aid of a 3D printer, traveled to New York and used a ruse — posing as an investor at a multibillion-dollar firm — to contact the company for details on the event. “On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione told the Manhattan federal court, which he entered shackled at the feet but not handcuffed in his beige jail uniform.

Vance presses Justice Department to investigate hospitals over transgender care
Vance sent the Justice Department a report issued Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Services accusing hospitals of incorrectly billing insurers for transgender health care procedures — such as prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to minors — in order to make a profit. “Some pediatric gender clinics and children’s hospitals have apparently used misleading or even fraudulent diagnostic and billing codes to ensure that insurance companies will cover the procedures,”…

Homicides dropped 18.1% in 2025 to the lowest rate since 1956, FBI says
Experts note that national violent crime rates have been declining since 2022, and pinpointing an exact reason is difficult. They say multiple factors contribute to decreases in crime rates seen in the FBI report, which is based on data reported voluntarily by many but not all law enforcement agencies across the country.

Cuba after Six Months of the Oil Blockade: Crisis and the Road to Recovery
For more than six decades, the United States has attempted to make the Cuban people pay for their decision to pursue an independent, socialist path. The latest phase of this economic war has targeted the island’s most vulnerable artery: its energy supply. Six months after Washington intensified pressure on countries and companies supplying oil to Cuba, the policy has not produced democracy or improved the lives of ordinary Cubans. It has produced darker homes, immobilised buses, interrupted hospitals, and greater difficulty in moving food from farms to cities. The immediate task is to prevent a humanitarian disaster. The larger task is to replace coercion with sovereign cooperation and to help Cuba build an energy system that cannot again be strangled by a foreign power.

Gaza starvation: Why Israel's supporters are misrepresenting Unicef study
Israel has consistently denied that it has used starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza. These denials date back to Israel’s submission to the International Court of Justice in response to South Africa’s genocide case at the Hague in January 2024. Its lawyers asserted that “Israel has publicly stated repeatedly that there is no limit on the amount of food, water, shelter or medical supplies that can be brought into Gaza”. From the start, these protestations have been challenged by human rights organisations. Amnesty International reported that “at no point” between October 2023 and early July 2024 did Israeli authorities allow “adequate aid and other essential life-saving supplies” to be provided. After Israel imposed a total blockade spanning March to mid-May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it generated “one of the world’s worst hunger crises”, with 57 children reportedly dying of malnutrition - and noted that “this number is likely an underestimate”. When the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November 2024, the allegations included “the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population”. Israel is naturally entitled to challenge these allegations, and its supporters have regularly done so. Last week, they launched a fresh campaign in the wake of the publication of a Unicef survey addressing malnutrition in Gaza, focusing on children under the age of five.
