Yes. Fundamentally, his realism is commendable in and of itself. Every LARPer who thinks he'd have saved communism with some bright idea is another Gorbachev in disguise, unaware of the underlying problems each country faced and utterly unable of tackling them. Even if we grant dengism as a step backwards (which I don't agree with), it is the kind of step backwards necessary to step forwards: a long march through the productive forces.
Moreover, the idea that the west exported their industry is more or less a meme. US manufacturing is stronger than ever, it has a lower share of output and employment because that is, fundamentally, how manufacturing works. (Capital substitutes labour, labour cascades to service sector. Even China is now majority service-sector employment!)
