Even if we grant dengism as a step backwards (which I don't agree with), it is the kind of step backwards necessary to step forwards: a long march through the productive forces.
Moreover, the idea that the west exported their industry is more or less a meme. US manufacturing is stronger than ever, it has a lower share of output and employment because that is, fundamentally, how manufacturing works. (Capital substitutes labour, labour cascades to service sector. Even China is now majority service-sector employment!)
