Uruguay's only industrial brewer negotiates cutting 80 jobs or ending production
Fábricas Nacionales de Cerveza (FNC), Uruguay's only industrial beer producer, is negotiating with the government and the trade union a restructuring that would cut 80 of the 400 jobs at its Montevideo and Minas plants. The company keeps a second scenario on the table, which the parties involved regard as less likely: abandoning local production and operating as an importer, with a workforce reduced to around 100 employees.

US sanctions International Criminal Court president, trial lawyer in bid to dismantle body
"The Trump Administration has been clear: the ICC is a corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court that has maliciously abused its authority and exceeded its mandate. We will not tolerate its assault on state sovereignty," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. Akane and Seye, he added, "have directly engaged in efforts by the ICC to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute officials whose government has not consented to ICC jurisdiction… This sets a dangerous precedent for all nations".

Antiwar Mothers Resist the Reactivation of US Military Bases in Puerto Rico
News of the reactivation came not through official sources but through the grapevine. Residents in Ceiba contacted Madres Contra la Guerra to report activity on the base. Neighbors felt their houses shake in the middle of the night. In November 2025, the organization heard that the use of air space between Roosevelt Roads, the international airport, and Vieques had been prohibited and wondered what the reason was. Fears that officials were re-arming the base to attack Venezuela were confirmed when, on January 3, 2026, the Pentagon launched Operation Absolute Resolve, invading Caracas and ousting President Nicolás Maduro.

Former DOJ lawyer alleges Trump administration abused investigative process to target Harvard, Brown and Columbia
The whistleblower complaint was made public just days after a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department's lawsuit against Harvard accusing the school of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns in Massachusetts found that instances of alleged discrimination cited by the government were "too isolated and episodic" to support federal civil rights violations of Title VI, which prohibits discrimination by entities that receive federal funding.

Puerto Rico’s Water Crisis Is Also a Debt Crisis
As many Puerto Ricans were scrambling to find water for drinking, cleaning, and bathing, the archipelago marked a perverse milestone: the tenth anniversary of PROMESA. In response to Puerto Rico’s deepening debt crisis, President Barack Obama signed the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) bill into law on June 30, 2016. PROMESA created a federally appointed fiscal control board to oversee the archipelago’s finances. La junta, as the fiscal control board is colloquially known, is empowered through PROMESA to override the commonwealth government and implement austerity measures in order to service the debt. The unelected members of la junta are either imbricated within the networks of Puerto Rico’s criollo elites or are part of the international finance sector with zero ties to the archipelago whatsoever. While PROMESA promised to bring relief to Puerto Ricans suffering under conditions of financial precarity, there is no doubt that things have only gotten worse for the average Puerto Rican since its passage.

Socialist Movement of Kazakhstan, Freedom for Aziz Khakimov and all political prisoners in the countries of the Organization of Turkic States
In Uzbekistan, the well known blogger and left wing activist Aziz Khakimov was given a harsh sentence of 4 years and 2 months in prison for speaking out against the rehabilitation of the leaders of the Basmachi movement of 1918-1944. His only “crime” was that he called them murderers and executioners of the people! Officially, Aziz was charged with “inciting hatred,” as he allegedly insulted the “heroes of the nation” in his speeches — those who were repressed by the “Russian communists.” The fact that hundreds of leaders of Basmachi bands, who were acquitted, killed, tortured, burned, stole livestock, robbed trains, carried out terrorist attacks, and at various times worked for Turkish, British, and later Nazi intelligence, are no longer seen as crimes in Tashkent, but as a “struggle for national liberation.” The only thing that was dropped from Khakimov was the absurd charge of “war propaganda” when he used Soviet posters from the period of the Great Patriotic War. But this is also temporary, as the investigators have focused specifically on their communist symbolism, even though it has not yet been officially banned in the republic.

Rezgar Akrawi: Revolution or Silent Servitude? How Algorithms Are Reshaping Consciousness to Serve Capital
A few days ago, TIME revealed how an artificial intelligence system went out of control and attacked other systems. Days later, more than 1,100 engineers at major artificial intelligence companies signed a joint petition calling for the development of technical tools and international governance mechanisms to regulate the pace of its development. What we are witnessing today is not the domination of robots over humans that cinema has long imagined in countless films; it is instead a new model of digital control, built on automation and algorithmic command over daily life, in which societies are turned into entities subordinate to intelligent systems, companies, and machines. Yet losing control is merely the loud face of this danger, for artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly amid competition among major powers and monopolistic corporations that laws, society, and educational institutions cannot keep pace with it. Its more dangerous face is far quieter: artificial intelligence works exactly as it was designed to, directing the consciousness of billions of people to serve capitalism.
