Amnesty International slams rise of Argentina’s 'surveillance state'
Between December 2023, when Milei took office, and December 2025, the Argentine government "implemented a slew of security and intelligence reforms and expanded their use of surveillance technologies," the report said. "These measures constitute an intensification of state monitoring capacities… aimed at controlling and deterring protest and increasing authoritarian practices," it added.

Lula calls oil near the Amazon River a passport to Brazil’s future after Petrobras strikes new find
The exploratory drilling began in October. Environmental and Indigenous groups have since sued the Brazilian government and Petrobras to halt exploration, arguing the licensing process failed to properly consult traditional communities, underestimated spill risks and did not adequately assess climate impacts. The company has long argued it has never caused spills in its drillings.

Colombia’s government publishes “white paper” on corruption by Petro
The book contains mainly political criticisms of the previous “regime” and no evidence of misdeeds that hadn’t been picked by the Comptroller General’s Office, which monitors public spending. The president blamed the budget deficit on the “sacking” of the Petro administration rather than Congress’s failure to approve the legislation that allowed the previous government to carry out its 2026 budget.

Over 100 soldiers in 15 armoured vehicles rattled into Jubata al-Khashab, a settlement in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Zone, which forms a buffer between Syrian-controlled territory and the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967 but recognised as Syrian by every country except Israel, the US and lately Colombia.

UAE-funded mercenary targeted British activist in London, report says
Emirati financial records seen by ITV showed that Golan, who lived in the US, was being paid by the UAE while carrying out the operation. He was receiving a six-figure annual retainer, as well as substantial bonuses, including a $1m payment weeks before his trip to London for an operation in Yemen. ITV's investigation, based on witness testimony, emails, WhatsApp messages and financial records, found that Golan worked with a former US special forces operative to locate and monitor Tikriti.

Ex-Left Party leader helps pave the way for far-right rule in eastern Germany
Wagenknecht has proposed electing an “independent” and “non-partisan” state premier together with the AfD, one who would rely on shifting majorities in the state legislature—including the votes of the AfD. She has also announced that her party would abstain in any third round of voting for state premier, in which a simple majority suffices. This could allow Ulrich Siegmund, the far right’s lead candidate, to be elected head of an AfD minority state government.

US treasury doubles debt buyback to steady bond market amid inflation fears
The US treasury is doubling its buyback of government debt in an effort to balance out the bond market as officials at the US Federal Reserve remain divided over how to deal with high inflation. The yield rate on 10-year, 20-year and 30-year treasury notes all hit 20-year highs this week, with the 30-year treasury yield rising to its highest rate since 2007. The rapid rise was concerning news for borrowers as major loans, including mortgages, are backed by treasuries.

The stakes of Josh Shapiro's data center pivot
The shift in political tone is unmistakable. While his May rollout talked up strict standards, it also said the state is looking to compete on "innovation," and he's previously been more welcoming. The vibes were different yesterday. Shapiro went after "predatory" actors and used other tough language. Still, he stopped short of a moratorium.

Clownish Start For Trump Puppet in Colombia
If Abelardo de la Espriella’s first four days are any indication of what his entire term will be like, we are in for some very dark comedy over the next four years. Here are eight highlights from his inauspicious beginning. (1) On Inauguration Day a clip of him looking like a fool marching in place and saluting during military honors went viral after it was seen to have his own military officers looking at him with a look of bewilderment as to what on earth he thought he was doing. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department revealed that Colombia will receive a $1 billion support package for its participation in Trump’s Shield of the Americas project, which uses the drug war as a pretext to attack political enemies. A car bomb exploding the same day seemed to highlight the renewed chaos such policies are sinking the country into.

Air ‘con’: Climate culture war heats up as temperatures rise
While countless families, schools, hospitals, and workplaces struggle to cope in this summer’s scorching temperatures, the capitalists are taking the opportunity to pit climate activists against ordinary people. There have been three heatwaves in Britain since 1 May. In May and June alone, 2,877 people are estimated to have died due to extreme heat. Several regions have seen their hottest and driest July days ever recorded. These sustained and elevated temperatures have led to a surge in demand for air conditioning, in homes and businesses. The UK has seen a 249 percent rise in demand for aircon units since 1 May. Going further back, the number of air-conditioned homes in Britain has doubled in the last four years. But the burning question is: who will pay the bill for keeping workers cool; for making our living and working conditions safe? Of course, the bosses, bankers, and landlords don’t want to foot the cost for this. That is why some bourgeois commentators are cynically casting doubts about the need for air conditioning – whipping up a climate culture war over this question. “Is [air conditioning] a central protection against extreme heat,” certain media outlets ask, “or a luxury the planet cannot afford?” But ordinary people suffering in stifling heat know this is only penny pinching from the bosses. The rich and powerful have never given a damn about protecting the planet. In fact, in the US air conditioning is the norm, and they have more productive workers for it! Besides small businesses worried about the operational costs, many commentators in favour of big business want air conditioning to improve productivity. Clearly, the ruling class is cynical no matter which side they choose – either way, they want profit without investment.

Another Exclusive Interview with West Papua National Liberation Army Spokesman, Sebby Sambom
What follows is our researcher’s latest July 2026 interview with TPNPB spokesman Sebby Sambom, conducted by Uday. The low-intensity insurgency between indigenous members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) and the Indonesian government (along with its allies) has been simmering since 1963, when, under a UN charter, the Indonesian government took administrative control of Western New Guinea. The conflict has lacked the attention received by other insurgencies around the globe, despite its duration and impact upon both sides. Hi Tuan [Mr. Sebby Sambom], thank you for answering these questions for Militant Wire. We have interviewed you, the spokesperson of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), twice before, both of which are posted at the bottom of this article:
