Chinese court sentences founder of troubled property developer Evergrande to life in prison
The decision marks a milestone in Evergrande’s saga after it defaulted on more than $300 billion in liabilities when Chinese authorities cracked down on excessive borrowing in the real estate industry in 2020. That triggered a crunch among many developers and brought on a downturn in the property market that has weighed on the broader economy ever since.

"We are experienced enough not to fall into the trap of figures like (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu, who aim to undermine peace and stability in our region," said Burhanettin Duran, the Turkish presidency's director of communications. After the site was struck, causing damage to its runways, reports said that a Turkish delegation had been at the site just hours earlier, but Turkey has denied a military visit to the location.

‘We are starving’: Palestinians besieged by settlers in West Bank homes run out of food
Israeli soldiers arrived last week, ostensibly to remove the settlers, but have since effectively contributed to the siege by blocking food deliveries to the families. “The municipal council tried to bring us food, but the soldiers prevented them, and the food was left outside,” Hassan told Middle East Eye. “Unicef staff were able to deliver some food to us a few days ago, and now it’s starting to spoil.”

Impatient savers are hindering Milei’s lending push in Argentina
The mismatch is becoming a broader obstacle to Milei’s recovery as the government seeks to stimulate lending to kickstart more economic activity and hiring. The Central Bank is injecting more liquidity into Argentina’s financial system in an effort to keep rates low after a surge of borrowing costs last year to contain a peso sell-off at the time.

For working-class and low-income tenants like Soule, falling behind on these utility charges can lead to eviction notices. While there is no national data on evictions tracked by cause, tenant attorneys and advocates in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Oakland and Columbus, Ohio, said utility-related eviction cases appear to be increasingly common.

AOC and Mamdani Should Stop Throwing the Black Lives Matter Movement Under the Bus
In 2020, a record number of people across the United States took to the streets in the movement for Black lives, demanding justice for George Floyd and victims of police violence. Last week, two of the country’s most popular progressives — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — threw this historic movement under the bus. Speaking to ABC, AOC said that, “Woke 1 was crazy” — a phrase attributed to a tweet by New York City Council member Chi Ossé, referencing his social media posts from 2020. Days later, Mamdani more explicitly repudiated a key demand of the uprising, saying: “I’ve made very clear that I do not believe in defunding the police.” But what’s actually “crazy” is calling yourself a socialist while believing in peaceful coexistence with the police.

( 1995) Social Anarchism or Lifestyle Anarchism: An Unbridgeable Chasm part 1: Social Anarchism or Lifestyle Anarchism by Murray Bookchin
This short work was written to deal with the fact that anarchism stands at a turning point in its long and turbulent history. At a time when popular distrust of the state has reached extraordinary proportions in many countries; when the division of society among a handful of opulently wealthy individuals and corporations contrasts sharply with the growing impoverishment of millions of people on a scale unprecedented since the Great Depression decade; when the intensity of exploitation has forced people in growing numbers to accept a work week of a length typical of the last century — anarchists have formed neither a coherent program nor a revolutionary organization to provide a direction for the mass discontent that contemporary society is creating.. Instead, this discontent is being absorbed by political reactionaries and channeled into hostility toward ethnic minorities, immigrants, and the poor and marginal, such as single mothers, the homeless, the elderly, and even environmentalists, who are being depicted as the principal sources of contemporary social problems. …. My emphasis in the pages that follow concerns the steady withdrawal of self-styled anarchists these days from the social domain that formed the principal arena of earlier anarchists, such as anarcho-syndicalists and revolutionary libertarian communists, into episodic adventures that eschew any organizational commitment and intellectual coherence — and, more disturbingly, into a crude egotism that feeds on the larger cultural decadence of present-day bourgeois society.
