Hague arbitration panel says India must honor water-sharing treaty with Pakistan
India’s Ministry of External Affairs called the panel an “illegally constituted” body and said India had never recognized its legal authority or participated in its proceedings. The ministry said the tribunal had been established in violation of the treaty and that New Delhi’s decision to hold the agreement in abeyance remained in force.

Communist Party of Venezuela denounces Rodríguez government’s handing over of oil wealth to the U.S.
"The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) categorically rejects this latest and serious transfer of national assets carried out by the illegitimate and illegal triumvirate that holds de facto power in Venezuela. Information that has come to light in recent days confirms the transfer of one-fifth of Venezuela’s oil reserves to U.S. companies through agreements negotiated behind the backs of the Venezuelan people, without transparency, and outside the constitutional controls that must govern any operation involving the Republic’s strategic interests. Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the transfer of 17 strategic oil fields with approximately 65 billion barrels of proven reserves. According to the list that has circulated, not all of these are exclusively virgin fields. The agreement provides for new developments in fields where oil reserves have already been proven and where operational knowledge has been accumulated over decades. This is neither a minor agreement nor a simple commercial transaction. We are witnessing the transfer of a significant portion of the nation’s primary wealth under conditions unknown to the country and regarding which there has been neither the necessary public debate nor the parliamentary oversight established in Articles 150 and 187 of the Constitution." Once again, fundamental matters of Venezuelan political and economic life are announced from the White House, and Miraflores simply goes along with it.

Bolivia: New Roadblocks Challenge Paz’s Repressive State of Exception
With less than a month remaining before the legal deadline for the state of emergency imposed by Rodrigo Paz’s government expires, popular discontent is once again growing in Bolivia. Last week, a group of farmers from the province of Marbán, in the department of Beni, set up a roadblock near the San Pablo Bridge. The move disrupted traffic on the highway connecting Trinidad and Santa Cruz and forced the suspension of departures from the Santa Cruz bus terminal to Beni. In an official statement, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) reported that the roadblocks are preventing tanker trucks carrying liquefied natural gas from passing, leaving several municipalities in northern Potosí without a supply. YPFB reported that several tanker trucks remain stranded on the blocked roads, directly affecting the regular distribution of natural gas in Llallagua, Uncía, Chayanta, and Aymaya.

Sanrizuka 40 years on: documentary on the Narita Airport struggle
A 2006 documentary revisiting the Sanrizuka struggle forty years after the Japanese government decided to build Narita Airport. Focusing on the Toho district, where farmers continued to live and work under the flight path, the film documents the long conflict over land, development and state power. English subtitles have recently been added. In 1966, the Japanese government decided to construct a new international airport at Sanrizuka in Narita, Chiba Prefecture. The decision was made without prior consultation with many local residents, including farmers whose homes and fields stood on the proposed airport site. The resulting resistance developed into the Sanrizuka struggle, one of the most intense and long-running conflicts in postwar Japan. Farmers defending their land were joined by students and activists, while the state responded with compulsory acquisition, riot police and repeated attempts to complete the airport project. This documentary was made around the fortieth anniversary of the original 1966 decision. It focuses particularly on the Toho district, where residents continued to refuse the sale of their land and to farm beside the airport. Aircraft pass directly over their homes and fields.
