Philippine Vice-President to be arrested for threats against President Marcos
Ms Duterte had already already impeached by the House of Representatives in May on the same charges, as well as over alleged financial anomalies. A conviction could derail her plans to seek the presidency in 2028, when President Marcos’s six-year term ends. A lawyer of the vice-president, who has denied the charges, suggested she will post bail to avoid detention while facing trial by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

Argentina’s Milei escalates Falklands dispute, seizing on Trump comments and oil tensions
Argentine President Javier Milei escalated his country’s dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands on Thursday, vowing new measures to halt an oil project near the British-controlled archipelago and praising U.S. President Donald Trump for saying Washington could reconsider its neutral stance on the islands’ sovereignty. Milei cast Trump’s comments as proof that his close relationship with the U.S. president — criticized by political opponents as overly deferential — was paying dividends.

Tanzanian opposition leader ordered to defend himself in treason trial
Tanzania’s High Court has ruled that Chadema party chairman Tundu Lissu must present a formal defense in his treason trial, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of death if he is convicted. The ruling is not a conviction. At this stage of a criminal trial, the court is only deciding whether the prosecution has produced evidence that, left unanswered, could support a conviction. It is not a final determination of guilt, nor a detailed assessment of witness credibility.

Secretive' UAE and Swiss-based firms found to be major crude suppliers to Israel, says report
Despite a Turkish embargo against Israel, the majority of the oil shipped by the two companies flows through the Turkish port of Ceyhan. Researchers also identified two subsidiaries of Heritage on the Turkish trade register. While oil giants including BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil and Shell have faced criticism over their role in supplying oil to Israel during its genocide in Gaza, the part played by a shady network of oil traders in the supply chain has received far less scrutiny.

Communist Firebrand Nikolai Bondarenko Arrested in Saratov
Party officials said he faces charges of “extremism” over an old social media post featuring a photo of the late opposition activist Alexei Navalny. However, they said that the account that made the post does not belong to Bondarenko. … Bondarenko rose to national fame through his fiery, unfiltered attacks against Russia’s deeply unpopular 2018 pension reforms. During his tenure in the Saratov regional assembly from 2017 to 2021, he built a large social media following through theatrical political stunts, including a viral experiment where he tried to survive on a monthly pension of 3,500 rubles ($52).

Average wages no longer buy a standard-size home in most of Europe
The old maxim that steady employment and an average salary would guarantee you access to a decent home for starting a family is now faltering under the weight of a runaway housing market. For more than a decade, house prices have risen far faster than household incomes, widening a gap that leaves an increasing number of people shut out of the market. As a result, more than 70% of the European population lives in regions where an average wage is not enough to buy a home larger than 75 square meters (807 square feet), even with a 30-year mortgage.

Ro Khanna Demands End to Trump’s Iran War ‘Before the Midterms’
Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Trump aides were seeking to stop the war from escalating for now to keep it out of the headlines and prevent Republicans from losing even more support before November. US House passes bill to crack down on university boycotts of Israel
The Republican-majority chamber voted 237-169 in favor of the "Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act," which would have to pass the Senate in order to become law. … U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, said in a statement before the vote that he opposed the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement but would vote no because he supported Americans' right to free expression. Gloria Steinem Was the Godmother of Neoliberal Feminism
Gloria Steinem, the establishment’s favorite radical feminist, died on September 2. The mainstream media has gone all out in praising her, with the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times united in their adulation. The Times called her the “personification of the women’s movement” and credited her with helping to usher in “sweeping cultural transformations across virtually every facet of American life, from the boardroom to the courtroom to the bedroom.” They approvingly quote her self-description as an “entrepreneur of social change.” For many people, she is the only radical feminist they can name, eclipsing the extraordinary women who planned and launched the successful women’s liberation movement starting in 1967. Steinem did wield enormous influence. Ms. magazine and the Ms. Foundation for Women, which she cofounded, came to define what was worthy in the feminist project. But to the women’s liberation pioneers she displaced, this meant silencing the radicals and promoting the anodyne. When Steinem described Ms. as “a kind of connective tissue for women all across this country who felt isolated until we came along and let them know they were not alone,” feminist pioneers saw Steinem as taking credit for work already done by the movement. The women’s liberation movement didn’t need Ms. to publicize it. It had already been on the front page of nearly every mass circulation magazine and had produced ten mass-market anthologies by 1971, selling millions of copies. The movement published one hundred small newspapers and journals, including Off Our Backs, It Ain’t Me Babe, and Woman’s World. And it had already won substantial victories by the time Steinem emerged on the scene. Thousands of working-class women were suing employers for sex discrimination. Abortion was legalized in New York State in 1970. The Equal Rights Amendment passed the House of Representatives in 1971 and the Senate in March 1972, followed immediately by twenty-two states.

The Pentagon takes control of Venezuela’s oil: Imperialist thievery and the bankruptcy of bourgeois nationalism
What was presented for two decades as “Socialism of the 21st Century” was, from its origins, the diversion of a revolutionary upsurge into national reformism funded by oil rent. Leon Trotsky’s analysis of Lázaro Cárdenas’s nationalizations in Mexico supplies the clearest explanation of this phenomenon. A national bourgeois government in a semi-colonial country, he wrote, “veers between foreign and domestic capital,” governing either as the instrument of foreign capital or by maneuvering with the proletariat to gain limited room against it. Trotsky was explicit that it would be “an outright deception” to claim the road to socialism runs through nationalization by a bourgeois state. Under Chávez, the private sector’s share of GDP reached 70 percent—higher than in 1998. The employers’ share of national wealth against labor hit a record 48.8 percent in 2008, while real wages fell. In 2012, Venezuela had the world’s most profitable banks and its best-performing stock market. The misiones expanding social assistance and services were real and temporarily lowered poverty. But nothing altered the country’s dependence on a single commodity and, through it, on imperialist finance capital. When prices collapsed and Obama declared Venezuela a national security threat, the whole edifice fell apart. Chavismo and its apologists had systematically suppressed the sole force capable of opposing imperialist aggression, the independent struggle of the working class, and their own “anti-imperialism” was exposed as empty rhetoric.
