Far-right AfD wins key German state election but falls just short of majority
That was far ahead of Merz’s CDU , which polled 17.2% – losing about half its support – and won 15 seats. The centre-left Social Democrats polled 9.3%, the Greens 8.9% and the Left party 8.6%, winning eight seats apiece. The BSW party, which has said it would not elect either Siegmund or incumbent Sven Schulze as governor but criticises the “firewall” against AfD, took 5.3% and five seats. Participation in the election was at a record high of 76.5%.

Reacting to the incident, Katz said, “If … the Palestinian Authority’s security mechanisms and related bodies initiate, or we know with certainty that they are about to initiate, a terror attack in the style of October 7 against [Israeli] forces and Jewish settlements — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I have instructed the [military] to prepare for the opening of a full-scale war.”

Protests are escalating as the new academic year begins in several areas of Al-Hasakah and Kobani, following a decision to limit Kurdish-language classes to just three hours per week. The move has sparked widespread anger among students and their families, who see it as a violation of their right to learn in their mother tongue, amid growing fears that schools may close if their demands are not fulfilled.

Iraqi factions reject September deadline to hand over weapons
The factions' main demands include the withdrawal of US and Turkish forces from Iraq, an end to what they describe as Washington's "political and financial tutelage", the dismantling of the Peshmerga and deployment of federal forces in the Kurdistan Region, and the provision of missile and air defence systems capable of protecting Iraqi airspace. Mehdi al-Kaabi, a leader in the Nujaba Movement, separately told The New Arab that his group also "does not regard the government deadline for handing over weapons as binding".

Jamaica takes its case for reparations for Britain’s role in slavery to King Charles III
Using legal traditions that stretch back to the early days of the British Empire, Jamaica petitioned the king on Monday to refer a series of questions about slavery, and the U.K.’s responsibility to pay damages, to a committee of the Privy Council, which serves as the highest court for former colonies that retain ties to the British legal system. While the petition is formally addressed to the king, Charles has no personal say on whether it will be referred to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and he will act on the advice of the government.

Colombia’s government clashes with human rights office over De la Espriella walking among corpses
In a public statement, Marin reiterated that “in recent days, we saw the president of the Republic walking among the bodies—in white body bags—of people who were killed during Operation “Azarías” in Guaviare.” “I don’t recall ever seeing a president walking among the dead and taking pride in those deaths,” said the ombudsman, whose office is independent from the government.

The poorest in the US can’t find housing even as low-income units sit empty
The poorest people in the U.S. face the most acute shortages of affordable homes. But the majority of low-income housing financed in recent years is for those earning 50% of an area’s median income or above, according to a survey of state housing agencies. Some cities are now seeing an uptick in vacancies as rents for these units approach market rates. The result: Apartments designated as affordable sit empty because the poorest of the poor cannot afford them. Meanwhile, some people are forced into homelessness and others into desperate circumstances to pay for housing they can’t afford.

Federal investigators probe Amazon cargo jet’s fiery runway crash that killed 5 in Miami
Video of Sunday’s landing appears to show the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before touching down. Aviation experts said investigators will seek to determine exactly where the plane landed and, if it was beyond the normal touchdown zone, why the pilots did not abandon the landing and circle back for another attempt.

‘Nakedly political’: US attempts to link trans support to leftwing authoritarianism in new health department report
It follows attempts by the administration to limit access to gender-affirming care – including, on Friday, an agreement reached between the Department of Justice and a New York hospital to no longer offer pediatric gender-affirming care. Dozens of hospitals stopped offering gender-affirming care after the Trump administration began investigating them for offering the standard of care.

NJ corruption office that went up against George Norcross and lost will be dismantled
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will no longer exist as part of the shakeup, which takes effect Tuesday, the AG’s office told Gothamist. The public integrity office was created in 2018 under then-Gov. Phil Murphy to be a standalone unit dedicated to fighting public corruption and building trust in government. But the office has been dogged by high-profile prosecutorial missteps, highlighted by the failed prosecution of South Jersey power broker George Norcross, and the dismissal of 14 indictments of corrections officers and prison staff that had been related to violent cell extractions at the Edna Mahan women’s prison.

Dutch strike wave: welfare not warfare!
The Dutch government is trying to impose a budget which cuts billions from the welfare state to spend billions on imperialist rearmament. This week, thousands of workers from across the Netherlands – dockers, rail and transport workers, metalworkers, brewers, civil servants and cleaners – are striking to stop them. This is the biggest strike wave in decades. Its potential is enormous. Just a few hundred dockers in Rotterdam have shut down the busiest port in Europe, responsible for 30 percent of the EU’s container trade, in direct response to cuts that are explicitly designed to fund militarist spending. This movement is just a glimpse of the potentially unstoppable power of even a fraction of the European working class. With a militant lead, this force could bring the ruling classes to their knees and deal a blow against the continent-wide rush to remilitarise, paid for by the working class.

MKP’s Call for “Unity” WHY ARE WE SEPARATE, OR WHAT IS OUR DIFFERENCE?
Revolution is, of course, the work of the working class, the other labouring masses and, in total, the masses. The existence of oppressed and exploited classes constitutes the objective conditions of revolution. But without organizing the subjective force that provides leadership to the labouring masses under oppression and domination, it is not possible to carry the revolution to victory. More clearly, the leadership of the vanguard parties over the working class and the other strata of the people, with the perspective of revolution and power, is the precondition of revolution. Otherwise, revolution will not take place. Even if it does take place, it cannot be sustained. This reality, which we have expressed in very broad outline, is indispensable. However, a communist party cannot lead a revolution by its organizational structure alone. That party must also arm itself with an ideological and political line, equivalent to a program that commands its practice — the proletarian line. Without an ideological-political line that reflects the will of the party and sets out the character and path of the revolution, revolution is not possible. More clearly, a party that takes part in the class struggle with the role of leading the revolution can command its social practice only through an ideological-political line that corresponds to objective reality. A Communist Party that lacks ideological, political and program-level unity cannot lead the revolution. The rich practice of class struggles and socialism proves this. mIn summary, for a communist party to lead a revolution successfully, its organizational existence alone is not enough. An ideological-political-military program that shapes this organizational existence and gives direction within the class struggle is also necessary and indispensable. For a communist party to play its leadership role in the class struggle successfully, it must equip itself with a theory, politics and a program that reflects the will of the party. Otherwise, it remains deprived of the quality required to lead the revolution. It is tossed to the right and to the left in the vast sea of class struggle. It cannot meet the anger of the masses against the system on the correct basis, nor can it organize that anger with a perspective of power.
