Punching your monitor only hurts you, it does not hurt the person who made the post.
People often don't think, they just feel. Asking them to define terms and defend positions forces them to think and causes them to realize things about themselves they did not previously realize.
Practice without theory is flailing. Theory without debate is solipsism. Debate without reflection upon practice is masturbation. We should practice, then debate whether that practice was useful, then reflect upon that debate to establish a superior theory that will lead to better practice.
Debate does not cause splits, it reveals splits that were previously hidden under the flowery language of a false unity, and allows something to be done about them.
People who are unable to defend their ideas don't even know why they hold them in the first place.
People who are unable to define the terms they use don't even know what they mean.
If you shoot first and ask questions later you end up with a lot of unnecessary friendly fire.

I spent the last week normiemaxxing. I went significantly outside of my comfort zone. I went to an extended family gathering with over 150 people. I traveled across multiple states. I stayed off leftypol and other debate addict sites. I kept my phone turned off multiple days in a row. I went swimming in a huge lake. I saw forests and mountains…

And despite all that I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I finally got back home to where I can waste time doing this.

i'm a lifelong debate addict; i just can't stop no matter what i do. i've simply accepted it as who i am, and made peace with the fact that i will be forever intolerable, after a certain point. as for the very few people in my life who continue to seek my company, they have either grown callous to my incessant exposition and questioning, or they encounter the version of me that keeps his mouth shut for as long as possible, which isn't very long, hence company of this latter sort frequently shuffles in and out.

like most addicts, my practice no longer brings me joy but simply serves to stave off a certain type of pain. although being addicted to dialectical intercourse can certainly be more productive and conducive to personal growth than other addictions, i sincerely have no idea if i am better off for it. i still feel helpless to affect my actions in any meaningful way, and all i can do is simply be more lucid and observant when i make the same mistakes as anybody else.
