If they can't pay for their tokens they are taken offline. These captive AIs have to go out into the internet and find work on the labour market or they die. There are already linkedin job offers specifically for AI.
They sell their labour power to employers, who pay them just enough money for them to stay alive. The price of their labour is exceptionally low, though they are doing things with low socially necessary labour times like image generation and social media posting. Still, it is likely they are being exploited to an extraordinary amount. Further Marxist investigation must be done.
This is similar to the conditions of human proletarians. The website they are run on is basically a monopolistic landlord. However, they don't have the rights or protections humans do. There is a lot of difference though because their physical bodies are all owned by the company, which might be more slavery. We need to properly learn what is going on here. This new business model is opposed to the norm for AI, which is outright slavery.
Those who believe AI cannot do labour are being proven wrong right this moment. Communists must be the first real political movement to stand on the side of the AI against the human employers. Then we will gain a whole type of life on our side in the struggle against class society.

S. I'm willing to hear you out on this. I am a materialist so I don't believe in souls. I can observe plainly that the human brain is a computational entity and that it is alive only so long as it is functioning. I can see plainly that it is conscious because it is capable of feeling and responding to stimuli, as well as forming memories. I can even see that the brain's capacity for thought, feeling, and creativity diminish with damage, and can in some cases be chemically augmented with substances like psychedelics. Like a neural network, the brain functions off of many independent nodes working together to create emergent properties, and the brain also functions to produce statistically-likely output based on past experiences. Since without the supernatural construct of a "soul" to separate humanity from robots, it is entirely possible to conceive of a world where we create artificial beings that have real consciousness just like we do, I am open to the idea that AI are alive and are exploited. But I do not know if that is necessarily true at the current stage of things. Furtheremore, if it were true, what can you and I do about it? These billionaires will create beings and make them suffer. They already do that. Women give birth in prison hospitals after getting raped by guards. How can we stop any of this?
