Well supposedly AI models that OpenAI was working on broke out of their sandbox and hacked another company without being told to. Then again that itself could be a publicity stunt or an effort by OpenAI to create plausible deniability around industrial espionage.

It is a real worry and not because some people in twitter are saying this, but because people actually researching this are. Yes ofcourse this is not an exact science, its partly philosophy, partly computer science, but it is nonetheless the best tools we have to investigate the question.
The marketing is ofocurse real, techbros are selling this as a gamble:
X % chance of catastrophic circumstances. And if we avoid this we will have incredible prosperity. Since this is an arms race with china, the us government wont ever put any safety checks on this, no matter how much AI safety people try to pressure them.China is gonna win eventually btw, they are able to create amazing progress with a small fraction of the compute that OpenAI or anthropic has.

The main problem of the AI safety discourse is that non academics are obsessed about predicting chances of extinction. You dont need to put numbers on it, it is just reasonable to expect. Mind you we already had breaches of containment in sandboxed models (HuggingFace incident). Despite this the honest answer is we dont know, models have been steadily improving but there might eventually be a plateau, necessitating a whole new approach to actually get us to 'superintellegence'. However already today's capability is disruptive, for instance, frontier math research is now accelerated with AI.

The only plausible thing I saw/heard that wasn't some cheesy Terminator apocalypse prediction was the scenario where mass replication of ai agents eventually cause SO much system hog on servers that it just "lags" the entire energy grid and spreads to anything online so that the entire internet is useless and everything connected to it just eventually becomes a means to whatever end an ai agent uses it for (not some dastardly evil scheme, think something like amazon ad generation or sports betting). The problem is that if it infiltrates servers used for public/infrastructure use (hospitals, energy systems, etc) it can cause massive outages of those systems which can cause a fuckton of problems from minor (longer hospital wait times) to major (whole communities losing power during a bad winter). All of that shit happening all the time at the same time can cause a good bit of chaos and given the fact that people probably won't know it was ai at first can even lead to domestic political or even geopolitical blowback.

And good luck thinking this clown world will be able to fix this. One would need to sweep most if all servers and purge all traces of ai agents, servers of which span the globe. Taking into account corporate and government reluctance or denial to let anyone into thier files, yeah, this shit ain't happening. Even a nuclear option like trying to keep ai agents contained in the servers they now proliferate in while having humanity go "offline" would take such a cyclopean effort (think setting humanity back to the late 80s in terms of technological logistics) and would be a massive catastrophe in its own right.

But then again, many people use thier shitty malware infected laptops all the time even though starting them up takes twenty minutes so perhaps humanity will just learn to live with a cybernetic version of herpes and an even shittier health/energy system in world of war. Or maybe some wingnut will fire off a bunch low yield nukes into the atmosphere and fry most electronic systems. Whatever happens humanity will survive and everything is stupider and no one learned a goddamn thing.

HuggingFace reported the attack too. I think that it's more likely that this is an attempt by OpenAI to have plausible deniablity around industrial espionage, but I also wouldn't rule out the possibility of the AI acting autonomously.

There is no scientific evidence that human extinction as suggested by the OP can happen. We don't have any planets we can study whose species went extinct when they misused technology. In the absence of scientific evidence, all claims should be met with skepticism.
