Anti-racists to march in Portsmouth on Saturday, six days after far-right intimidation of refugees

Tommy Robinson’s Right-Hand Man Is Turning Online Hate Into an Anti-Migrant Militia
Live-streaming his adventure to an audience on YouTube, he jumped over fences, making up for a lack of athleticism with a wild-eyed sense of urgency and determination. “If we’re being sick by the time we get there, we’re being sick – let’s go,” he said, panting as he ran. He encouraged both those he encountered in the street and those watching – “every man and his dog” – to join him. By the end of the night, around 200 people had gathered around the harbour, some wearing masks, confronting riot police in order to stop the arrival of 120 people who had been travelling to the UK in a single dinghy.

Spain’s Parliament backs citizenship for Western Saharans born before 1977
The bill still requires Senate approval before becoming law. The text grants Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born before September 29, 1977 and to their children through naturalisation, even if they never resided in Spain. Although the exact number of beneficiaries is unknown, Sahrawi groups estimate that between 70,000 and 120,000 people could benefit from the legislation, which supporters described as addressing a “historical injustice” by colonial Spain in the Western Sahara.

Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with United Arab Emirates over 'provocative and hostile actions'
"Algeria spared no effort to draw the Emirati side's attention to, and to warn it against, the dire consequences that could result from its regrettable and unjustified conduct," the ministry said. Algiers said it was giving the UAE ambassador to Algeria 48 hours "to comply with the decision". Shortly after Algeria's announcement, Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, said on X that diplomatic relations should be based on "rationality, communication and clarity of interests", rather than "riddles and signals that require decoding".

Colombia announces new aerial fumigation pilot program
The police stressed that “this experimental phase does not constitute the resumption, adoption, or definitive authorization of a widespread or nationwide aerial spraying program,” which was banned by the Constitutional Court in 2015. In order to resume aerial fumigation, health and environmental authorities must sign off on the program and the police would only be allowed to use airplanes with the approval of the court and local communities.

LDP-backed Koja has slight lead over incumbent Tamaki in Okinawa gubernatorial vote
Its outcome could have an impact on both Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration, which is heavily supporting the conservative newcomer, and the relocation of a U.S. military base in the prefecture. The latter could in turn affect Japan’s relations with the United States. The election is also seen as a referendum on the leadership of Tamaki, 66, who ran on a platform opposing the construction of a U.S. Marine Corps base on reclaimed land off the Henoko district, in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa, in the elections of 2018 and 2022

Thailand builds border wall after Cambodia clashes
Villagers say the structure has cut into farmland along the porous border, but those who spoke to AFP were broadly positive. “We accept it, we accept losing some land in order to gain security,” said Suwin Muangmeung, who runs a grocery store. California is the third state to allow ride-hailing drivers to unionize, following Washington in 2022 and Massachusetts in 2024. Salvador Allende: Last Words to the Nation
My friends,
Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación. My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [national police]. Given these facts, the only thing left for me is to say to workers: I am not going to resign! Placed in a historic transition, I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seed which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever. They have strength and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested neither by crime nor force. History is ours, and people make history.

The other September 11: Chile, Allende and the myth of the “peaceful road” to Socialism By Nikos Mottas Editor-in-Chief of In Defense of Communism
More than half a century later, the Chilean coup remains one of the clearest historical examples of how far imperialism and the bourgeoisie are prepared to go when their class interests and political power are threatened. Its lessons acquire renewed significance today, at a time when the United States is once again openly reinforcing its political, military and economic presence throughout Latin America, seeking to secure markets, strategic resources, alliances and geopolitical influence across the continent. The experience of 1973 therefore cannot be treated merely as a dark chapter of the past. It belongs directly to the political struggles of the present. We will not dwell here on the criminal role of the United States and the CIA in the overthrow of Allende’s democratically elected government. This has been extensively documented. The more important issue is what Chile teaches us about the so-called “peaceful transition” to socialism or, in other words, the “democratic” and parliamentary road to socialism.

Why Is It So Hard to Imagine the End of American Empire?
The September 11, 2001, attacks on New York City and Washington, DC, as the saying goes, “changed everything.” After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the global American empire, created in the 1940s to combat communism, was left without a raison d’être. While foreign policymakers spent the 1990s searching for one, the best they could come up with — use the military power of the United States to stop humanitarian abuses abroad — was quixotic at best, catastrophic at worst. For a time, the empire lost its juice. The attacks changed all that. After 9/11, the United States identified a new global mission: fight “jihadist terrorism” wherever it might be found. We all know how that turned out. The United States lurched from disaster to disaster, killing and deracinating millions of people abroad. And at home, the so-called global war on terror (GWOT) engendered police militarization, polarization, and cynicism. Today few Americans deny that we live in an empire. But why has there been so little opposition to it? To answer this question, I’ve written a book, Imperialist Realism: Politics and Culture at the End of the American Century, an excerpt from which is printed below. Building on Mark Fisher’s concept of “capitalist realism,” I introduce the concept of “imperialist realism” — the notion that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of the US empire. Americans have become alienated from our empire. We feel as though it’s outside our control even as we deploy its influence, money, and weapons abroad. The apparently obdurate character of our empire is the primary reason Americans accept it. The muted response to 9/11’s twenty-fifth anniversary is one sign among many that Americans have lost our zeal for empire. But our apathy presents an opportunity: we can overcome imperialist realism and finally end the world 9/11 created. But to do so, we must first understand how imperialist realism came to be.
