“We confirm that this remains true at the municipal level, where the majority of rental units are owned by chain and financial landlords,” the report says.
As for the “Who Owns Halifax” report, Dalhousie Legal Aid found that 20 landlords own more than 56% of the rental housing units in Halifax.
“If you’re a tenant who lives in a medium-or-large apartment building, there’s approximately a one in four chance that you rent from a financial landlord, and there’s a one in ten chance you rent from Killam,” the report says.
Dalhousie Legal Aid broke down landlord ownership into several categories: financial (REITs, etc.), chain, chain manager, multiple owners, single owner, non-profit, and co-op (the full definitions for each are in the report).
