DOJ went after protesters for felony assault, but juries, judges were unconvinced, AP analysis finds
The dismal record has raised questions about rushed investigations and aggressive charging tactics by prosecutors under pressure to show the Trump administration is cracking down on people who assault law enforcement. It comes as the Justice Department is facing broader setbacks in politically charged investigations, with grand juries repeatedly refusing to return indictments and trial juries granting acquittals.

Naomi Klein: ‘Extreme wealth has a deranging effect. It turns you into a supremacist’ Interview by Zoe Williams
The World Economic Forum get-together in Davos, Switzerland, has always had a twin purpose – to provide a platform for the super-rich to describe all the good they are doing on poverty and climate, and to give us a glimpse into their enviable lives. This year what we witnessed was, quite brazenly, the world’s richest men gathering to discuss the real estate possibilities of a mass grave. At that same Davos, Donald Trump announced his Board of Peace for the reconstruction of Gaza – it has delivered nothing substantial in the seven months since, but more significantly, Klein says, “we’re being hit with so many extraordinary events that it’s hard to hold on to what a big deal it is: they have announced a privatised United Nations”. “I think we understand that wealth compounds, right? Certainly rich people understand that wealth compounds,” Klein continues, speaking to me from her peaceful, roomy study in British Columbia. “But I don’t feel like we spend a lot of time really thinking about the implications of what it means for that much wealth to be compounded, and what that does psychologically. Part of the new shamelessness we’re seeing is just what happens when this amount of financial, mediagenic, technological and military weaponry is concentrated in the hands of this very small, unaccountable group of people. They stop trying to seduce us in any way.”

The Tragic Events in Chile: A Lesson for the Revolutionaries of the Whole World by ENVER HOXHA
In Chile it was believed that the relatively old-established democratic traditions, parliament, the legal activity of political parties, the existence of a free press, etc., were an insurmountable obstacle to any reactionary force which might attempt to seize power by violence. The reality, however, proved the opposite. The coup d’état of the rightist forces proved that the bourgeoisie will tolerate certain freedoms just so long as its essential interests are not affected, but when it sees that these interests are threatened, it is no longer concerned about ethics. The revolutionary and progressive forces in Chile have suffered a defeat. This is very serious, but temporary. A constitutional government may be overthrown, thousands of people may be killed and scores of concentration camps set up, but the spirit of freedom, the people’s spirit of revolt, can be neither killed nor imprisoned. The people are resisting, and this proves that the working masses are not reconciled to defeat, that they are determined to draw conclusions from this and to advance on the revolutionary road. The liberation struggle against reaction and imperialism has its zigzags, its ups and downs. There is no doubt that the Chilean people who have given so many proofs of their lofty patriotism, who have displayed such love for freedom and justice, and who hate imperialism and reaction so profoundly, will know how to mobilize their forces and fight the enemies blow for blow to ensure the final victory for themselves. For the Chilean people this is a grave, although temporary, misfortune, but for the modern revisionists it constitutes an all-round defeat, a complete overturning of their opportunist theories. ….

Condition of the Working Class in England, by Engels ch05: Competition
Competition is the completest expression of the battle of all against all which rules in modern civil society. This battle, a battle for life, for existence, for everything, in case of need a battle of life and death, is fought not between the different classes of society only, but also between the individual members of these classes. Each is in the way of the other, and each seeks to crowd out all who are in his way, and to put himself in their place. The workers are in constant competition among themselves as are the members of the bourgeoisie among themselves. The power-loom weaver is in competition with the hand-loom weaver, the unemployed or ill-paid hand-loom weaver with him who has work or is better paid, each trying to supplant the other. But this competition of the workers among themselves is the worst side of the present state of things in its effect upon the worker, the sharpest weapon against the proletariat in the hands of the bourgeoisie. Hence the effort of the workers to nullify this competition by associations, hence the hatred of the bourgeoisie towards these associations, and its triumph in every defeat which befalls them. The proletarian is helpless; left to himself, he cannot live a single day. The bourgeoisie has gained a monopoly of all means of existence in the broadest sense of the word. What the proletarian needs, he can obtain only from this bourgeoisie, which is protected in its monopoly by the power of the state. The proletarian is, therefore, in law and in fact, the slave of the bourgeoisie, which can decree his life or death. It offers him the means of living, but only for an "equivalent", for his work. It even lets him have the appearance of acting from a free choice, of making a contract with free, unconstrained consent, as a responsible agent who has attained his majority. Fine freedom, where the proletarian has no other choice than that of either accepting the conditions which the bourgeoisie offers him, or of starving, of freezing to death, of sleeping naked among the beasts of the forests! A fine "equivalent" valued at pleasure by the bourgeoisie! And if one proletarian is such a fool as to starve rather than agree to the "equitable" propositions of the bourgeoisie, his "natural superiors", [1] another is easily found in his place; there are proletarians enough in the world, and not all so insane as to prefer dying to living.

Killing of Kurdish soldier tests Syria integration
The killing of a Kurdish member of the Syrian Ministry of Defense has raised questions regarding security dynamics in Syria, particularly as the country undergoes a restructuring of its security and military institutions in the northeast.

Sipan Hazni, a young Kurdish man and former fighter with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who had recently joined the Syrian Ministry of Defense as part of the January 29 integration agreement, was abducted in Hasakah and subsequently found dead, having reportedly been shot and stabbed.

Security forces in Hasakah conducted an investigation after it emerged that Hazni was missing, with his body found near the village of al-Jamil. The local authorities apprehended a suspect who had attempted to flee on a motorcycle, and said investigations are ongoing to finalize the case before referring it to the judiciary.

Hazni’s uncle, Ahmed Hasso, told The Amargi that the family had been informed of his abduction prior to the discovery of his body. Videos purportedly showing Hazni’s abduction and killing spread on social media.

As a member of the SDF, Hazni fought on the front lines during the years of the war against ISIS. Hasso said that the family is demanding justice and accountability for the killing. “If fighters who align themselves with the state are killed in this manner, how can others trust the state?” he asked, in comments to The Amargi.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that his abduction was related to accusations surrounding the killing of members of the Bu Hassan clan of the Baggara tribe, which had occurred two years prior.

The killing has triggered protests in numerous Kurdish localities. Ahmed emphasized that the family does not wish to inflame conflict between Kurds and Arabs; rather, they seek accountability and are determined to ensure that justice is served for Sipan.

A delegation comprising officials from the Hasakah administration and the leadership of the Hasakah Brigade – formed from former SDF fighters – visited the family of Hazni to offer condolences and stated that all those involved would be held accountable.

Colonel Hisham al-Mustafa, a strategic expert within the Syrian government, told The Amargi that Damascus would assume its legal responsibilities regarding the incident and that security personnel would continue to pursue the perpetrators.

Al-Mustafa stated, “Kurds are Syrian citizens with equal rights alongside everyone else,” emphasizing that the incident is being treated seriously and that the investigation is proceeding.

The killing of Hazni has sparked various reactions and thrown another layer of difficulty over the alliance between former SDF forces and Damascus. Sherwan Ahmed, a Hasakah local, told The Amargi that he believes that certain factions within the government are seeking to stoke tensions and incite discord between Kurds and Arabs; he warned that such actions undermine trust in the integration process and risk destabilizing the region.

Ahmed called on the Syrian government to hold the perpetrators accountable and make the investigation results public, asserting that “justice and accountability are vital for building trust and preventing further escalation.”

This is not the first time newly integrated SDF fighters have been targeted. On August 11, the headquarters of the Qamishlo Brigade was attacked with a bomb, killing three fighters who had recently joined the Ministry of Defense.
