Is it shia islam or people who happen to follow the religion? Is it their faith which protects them from bombs? Are their organizational forms which have proven to be so adaptive born from their religious organizations? There's also the question of if they are anti-capitalist or resisting imperialism so as to find a more favourable position within the capitalist world order.

Regardless, reducing it down to only faith does a disservice to both the agents of history and their students. I will admit, I am not well versed in the matter but I am interested in what you and other anons have to say. History is full of myriad faithful resisting the ruling classes of their day so I'm sure this will be an interesting thread and not rapidly devolve into an idpol ridden sectarian shitfling.

Depends on who you ask in the west. I certainly think that there is a significant portion of first world proletarians who sinerely believe in their nation/status quo in an almost theological way. Christian nationalists and zionists for example, both seemingly willing to die for imperialism. Frankly, I think the struggle of communist forces in the imperial core isn't one of faith or conviction but of technical and social skill in the shadow of incredible state repression and ideological hegemony.
