Okinawa election win may give Tokyo freer hand on military build-up
Tamaki's defeat could weaken local efforts to halt the relocation of some U.S. Marines from the busy Futenma air base to a more remote facility at Henoko, on Okinawa's main island. Opponents want the troops moved out of the prefecture instead. Japan's government said on Monday it would press ahead with the relocation. Koja's victory may also make it easier to expand military access to airports and ports, according to Masaaki Gabe, a professor emeritus at the University of the Ryukyus.

‘Proven Leaders and Voices of Clarity’: Progressives Urge Ocasio-Cortez and Khanna to Enter 2028 Presidential Race =
Two progressive advocacy organizations Monday called on Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to enter the 2028 presidential race, singling them out as “proven leaders and voices of clarity.” Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and RootsAction announced an initiative aimed at lobbying the two congressional progressives to put their hats in the ring for the presidency, arguing they offer a much-needed alternative to establishment Democrats too eager to do the bidding of corporate interests.

Trump accepts key ethics restriction on massive crypto bill
The agreement allows for state attorneys general to take enforcement action on violations of the law — not just the Justice Department. Another change in the bill would require divestment or a blind trust for officials with a "significant" financial interest in an entity that issues cryptocurrencies, the AP reports. Democrats feared that a DOJ under Trump could look the other way on potential breaches of the law by Trump or his allies. The existing text of the bill says that elected officials, their spouses and federal judges are barred from issuing digital tokens.

Deep Dive: Amazon’s Latest Anti-Union Push Not Only Endangers Workers But Also NYC Streets
Amazon is using its status as a leader in sustainable delivery to threaten supporters of a landmark City Council bill that would pave the way for unionizing the drivers and e-bike riders that deliver its many packages, Streetsblog has learned. Amazon has already spent millions fighting the Council’s “Delivery Protection Act,” but is now quietly telling supporters of the measure that it will shut down its cargo-bike-delivery operation entirely if the Council passes the bill, which has the support of a majority of Council members, as well as that of the mayor.

EPA eliminates rule that limits planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from power plants
The rule change, first proposed last year, represents a fundamental shift from efforts by Democratic Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama to address climate change and regulate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that trap the sun’s heat. Environmental groups decried the change, saying it would come at a cost to Americans’ health and further degrade the environment.

Promises, Promises: AOC, Israel, and the DSA
Eager to maintain her image as a left populist as well as the patina of democratic socialism that comes with a DSA endorsement, AOC is changing her tune. After eight years of supporting Israel, she has now vowed to oppose all military funding to the country and promised to oppose any legislation that equates ant-Zionism with antisemitism. But her newfound political clarity on the state of Israel is too little too late. In fact, even a cursory reading of her public statement shows that she is — as the soviets used to say — trying to sit on two chairs with one ass. AOC wants to signal to the DSA that she is willing to vote against additional funding for the Iron Dome while still making it clear to her Democratic colleagues that she supports the defense of Israel and the Zionist and imperialist project the missile system helps to maintain.

Erik Houdini:Butt-Rock Hauntology, Nu Metal Nostalgia
Why are right-wing accounts suddenly nostalgic for Puddle of Mudd, one of the worst bands of the 2000s? This essay explores how the reactionary longing for a "pure" white rock past erases nu-metal's true multiracial, working-class roots. Hauntology is the anti-nostalgia because it is predicated on examining what was lost by past futures, not envisioning the past as a superior future. Are we nostalgic about nu-metal? Or do we see the multi-racial working class background of the artists who produced it, along with its current revival, as producing insights into a future that never came? It seems like a pseudo-intellectual difference, but you can see how it manifests within the discourse. That’s the thing with nostalgia. It is typically framed as a look at what they took from you, but seldom is "they" defined, and it is predicated on an idea that the past was more pure than the present or the future could ever be. It is deeply anti-material, acting on a baseline emotion that capitalism causes. When you participate in the capitalist economy, you cannot help but feel despair for this reality we are forced to drudge through. When you were a child in 1996 and someone bought you an N64 and Ocarina of Time, you were not aware that the climate was collapsing or that most species you know today will almost certainly go extinct if the mode of production is not changed. You did not even have to pay rent. The marketing firms know this. The boardrooms know this. The executives know this. And the reactionary cultivators of fascist culture know this too. They substitute the material past with the childhood one.

The UK Isn’t Serious About West Bank Settler Violence
This weekend brought yet another surge in the endless surge of Israeli violence in the Palestinian territories. But as the EU and UK get increasingly vocal over settler attacks in the West Bank, it’s well past the time that action, rather than words, was needed. Economic measures, we’re told, are on the table, with EU and British leaders meeting to discuss the issue this week. But don’t get your hopes up. The media and our governments have been very busy distinguishing settlers – groups of random stochastic terrorists – from the one entity they’ve yet to succeed in confronting: the state of Israel itself. The question is: will they manage it this time, before the West Bank goes up in flames?
