Nothing Radicalizes Someone Faster Than Having To Steal Food

There's something deeply radicalizing about having to steal food, about getting caught stealing food and watching the food that you were trying to steal get thrown away right in front of you. More and more, as prices go up, I've found myself depending on the self-checkout finesse.

Right now, I don't have a means of really cooking food, living hotel room, so I rely a lot on the hot food items at the various gas stations. As well as cheap processed slop from the dollar generals, lots of noodles and sandwiches. Now, all these corner stores have self-checkouts now in order to lower labor costs and maximize profit for the shareholder class. So I'll walk in, and I'm still a law-abiding citizen, you know. I'm not walking in and just walking out with what I want. But I get a hot dog. I know that's gonna be the main food item I'm eating today. Well, I'm gonna grab a second hot dog. I might even grab a third, and I'm only gonna pay for one.

Tornadoes or egg rolls or pizza slices. It's the same thing. I'm gonna double up, pay for one. I'm gonna take another one for free. Y'all charging so much? Charging $3.99 a slice, a pizza, $3.49 for a hot dog. Can't afford to do it any other way.

But when you get up to the register, and mind you, The person working the register only making minimum wage too. She worried about her job, 'cause she don't want to be stealing food like you. And even though you making minimum wage, so shit, she probably do steal food too. But she gotta protect her job, and I've talked about this before, how being a wage slave forces you to act as a sort of police of other working-class people.

So she sees in the bag, I got three tornadoes instead of one. Off, jump, the onus is on her. She doesn't have to inspect how many hot dogs are in tornado box, how many roller grill items have been taken. She just has to watch me put one on the self-checkout. She says, Hey, look, I got to charge you for the other two in there. And you say, Oh, I'm only getting one. Don't know why I grabbed three like that. And so take the two out, and they get thrown away right in front of you. No one could buy them after you've touched them.

And I've worked at convenience stores, gas stations, places with roller grills, places with hot food boxes. The amount of food that gets thrown away after every shift, after every day, after every round of cooking, it's incredible. And a lot of the times, they pour bleach on that food. There's a sign on the dumpster that says, Not for human consumption.

And yeah, as I'm telling this story, and there's a sense that maybe I'm the glutton. Do you really need three tornadoes? Do you really need two pizza slices instead of just one? Do you really need a second hot dog? But you have to understand, that's the food for the day. That's the whole meal.

Rich people make it a big deal when they do intermittent fasting. Oh, I'm on one meal a day. OMAD! I try to start off with a salad for my appetizer, and then I'll move to my steak and eggs, and then we'll finish off with maybe a protein oats with 90% cocoa dark chocolate. Rich people love their one meal a day. But for poor people, that's just the day. That's just normal. They don't call it intermittent fasting when the only thing you're eating that day is two pizza slices out of the hot box, and they've probably been sitting there for two hours. Hard not to think about how much more available cheap, healthy food is in a place like China when you're living off the American diet of $3 meal deals between shifts.

But you got to go to work, and you need to eat. It's a deeply radicalizing experience to watch that food get thrown away right in front of you, to literally have the attendant take the food from you and put it in a trash can, knowing that no one was going to eat it, knowing that chances are it probably would have been thrown away at the end of shift anyway, and knowing that the executives who run corporations like 7-Eleven and Circle K are making hundreds of millions of dollars a year. How could you not be a socialist after experiencing something like that? I didn't need to take a college class to get here. I just had to survive in the modern American economy.
