I'm an engineering student and I had an internship last summer in a factory. I like to imagine I understand dialectical materialism pretty well, having read all the books and articles you see recommended in reading lists from the works of Marx, Engles, Lenin, Stalin, mao and others as well as consuming content on the daily analyzing these books. I felt I was ready to discuss dialectical materialism with the factory workers and I gave it my best to make the discussion seem organic and to say thought provoking things and guide them to the conclusions themselves while staying down to earth but the workers never took me seriously and started making jokes at my expense, it's from then they lost all respect for me. Why are the working class like this?

I don't blindly follow what other communists tell me. I think hard on it and come to my own conclusions. Among their failures it cannot be denied that mao and Stalin also had successes. It's from these successes I want to learn. I don't want to take anyone's word for it that Stalin and mao are bad without doing my own research, my own investigations, and my own analysis so I can't be mislead.
OP you have taken the step of actually going out to the real world and doing some praxis. Now you have found it ain't easy organizing, it takes that which reading won't give you: actual social skills, charisma, persuasion, vernacular speech, tried and true tricks, etc. You are doing actual Marxism now. Your message is objectively true either way so you cannot control if those workers are receptive or labor aristocrats that won't give a shit, you can only control your own capacity to convey the message effectively.

There is nothing to adhere to in Stalin's writing, he utterly opportunistically bludgeons theory into whatever shape politically convenient at the time of writing, and Mao is was not a marxist, he never studied it beyond most superficial level, which is very obvious from reading any text of his.
