Key data missing for half of US child labor deaths, official report finds
Information is missing on over half of deaths at work of people under the age of 18 in the US because of significant gaps in child labor data, according to a government accountability office (GAO) report released on Tuesday. The report found that between 2013 and 2023, an average of 24 children under the age of 18 died each year due to work-related incidents. Over half of the 260 child fatality cases did not contain detailed data on the cause of death or the industry the child worked in.

Federal prosecutors charge Venezuelan man shot by ICE agent in Texas with assaulting an officer
Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer, according to a criminal complaint. Garces Perez, whose attorney has said still has a bullet lodged in his back from the Sept. 20 shooting, made an initial court appearance in an Austin federal court on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Texas.

Michigan nurse charged with helping immigrant flee ICE custody
The unnamed ​Mexican citizen injured himself while trying to escape ICE agents on May 28, the ⁠complaint said. He was taken to the hospital, where Freeman worked, for a ​medical evaluation and later underwent a CT scan, Wagner said. After the scan was ​completed, Freeman removed the immigrant from the scan room, according to the complaint. Security camera footage showed the man leaving the hospital through ambulance bay doors less than three minutes after Freeman retrieved ​him, the complaint said.

Judge Orders New York to Scrap Rollout of Second-Home Tax and Start Over

Amazon Is Perfecting Total Surveillance of Its Workforce
Although Amazon is increasingly synonymous with worker surveillance, the logistics behemoth has never been a pioneer in that space. UPS was the first fleet to install GPS in their vehicles back in 1991. Netradyne, the company that makes the AI-powered product Driver.i installed in most vehicles in Amazon’s fleet, had already logged over a hundred million minutes of driving time before Amazon signed the firm on. But with each new iteration of its delivery-aid-cum-surveillance tech, Amazon has proven its knack for taking an existing product and deploying it in a dystopian direction. And other companies tend to follow its lead. “Smart delivery glasses,” Amazon’s latest gadgets, which come with a specialized vest with a built-in battery-pack, were introduced on their in-house news site last October to little fanfare; only a couple of niche tech websites covered it. According to a recent post on r/AmazonDSPDrivers, a Reddit community for Amazon’s scattered global network of Delivery Service Partner (DSP) drivers, training with the smart glasses at some DSPs has begun. It’s not unlikely that a nationwide rollout may come as soon as this year’s holiday season. On the surface, the aim of smart delivery glasses is to replace the use of the smartphone on the job, allowing the driver to pay attention to their surroundings instead of looking at their phone. For DSP drivers, the smartphone is everything: It identifies packages, provides a walking path from the vehicle to the delivery location, instructs drivers on where and how to deliver items, photographs packages at the designated drop-off location, and requires a swipe to confirm completion of a delivery. With smart delivery glasses, Amazon promises to make delivering “safer and more seamless,” which is very likely true — I imagine, as a former DSP driver myself, that at least they will make it less annoying to sort through an overpacked cargo area. But the smart glasses reflect a larger philosophical position, one ubiquitous in Big Tech and fueled by the artificial intelligence gold rush: that the human is not enough, and that we need to be aided — and disciplined — by AI.

A Failed Reception System in Crete Turns People on the Move Into Political Targets
Residents of a small village in northern Crete, near Herakleion, are fighting the Greek government’s plan to convert a disused factory into a reception center for people on the move, escalating a monthslong standoff that pits xenophobic backlash against an increasingly securitized European border regime. “We’re not staying silent. We’re not backing down. No to the camp.” The slogan, painted in red and black across a large banner, hangs from the gate of a factory facing the Herakleion-Mires state highway, near the village of Athanatoi. A few yards away, a second banner reads: “No camp — the people have a voice.” Across the road stands the disused Skouloudis industrial complex, recently identified by Greece’s Ministry of Migration and Asylum as a site to be converted into a reception center for migrants crossing the stretch of sea between Libya and Greece and landing on the island’s southern coast. Since Minister Thanos Plevris announced the plan in mid-June 2026, Skouloudis has been at the center of a bitter standoff between authorities and local communities. The choice of this industrial site, however, is only the latest development in a long and contested decision-making process that began in the summer of 2025, when arrivals in Crete far outpaced those recorded along the Aegean route — the sea passage from Turkey to the Greek islands of Lesbos, Samos and Chios that has long been the country’s primary migration corridor — making the island Greece’s main point of entry. Against a backdrop of chronic absence of adequate first-reception facilities on the island, the handling of landings has fallen to entirely unsustainable emergency measures.
