>The people try to rise up to heaven
>The ruler of the universe divides the people by confusing their language to keep them out of heaven
is it a proto-class-conscious story? or just a story to explain the origin of language before people understood linguistics? on the one hand one can see the rudiments of class consciousness at play in the story, on the other hand there is no divide shown between the people doing the building and the people commissioning the building, it is just "the people" versus "heaven". But what is "heaven" if not the ruling class of the ancient world? It can also be the personification of all forces beyond our control, including forces like the weather. Somewhere along the way we conflated our ancestor worship and filial piety with nature personfication and got nature deities. this led to yahweh, to judaism, and eventually to the tower of babel story.
My ancestors
I have discussed the topic of the Tower of Babel before.

Jesus and his followers were quite radical for their time when you really think about it.
