More than 400 arrested as police clash with protesters across France
Police fired teargas in confrontations with protesters, as demonstrations across France were boosted by other groups angry over high prices and the fraying of a social welfare system. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across the country, and tensions erupted on the fringes of the nationwide demonstrations over absent teachers, decrepit school buildings and police violence. Late on Saturday, the interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, said there had been 400 arrests and most were adults who were not part of the high school protests.

Councils Face Upheaval After Labour Threat to End Coalitions With Greens
Labour’s threat to end local power-sharing agreements with the Greens in response to its ‘Zionism is racism’ motion could lead to disruption at councils across England and Wales. Bridget Phillipson, Labour’s chair, said on Thursday that Greens working in coalition with the party in local councils must “make clear that they reject” the motion. Otherwise, she said, “Labour will bring any such local arrangement to an end”.

Imran being forced into Benazir, Nawaz-style deal: opposition leader
Pakistan’s opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has accused the government of trying to force jailed former prime minister Imran Khan into an agreement similar to those that led former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto into exile. Achakzai made the allegation at a news conference at the Peshawar High Court on Friday, as opposition leaders challenged the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province governed by Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party before the move, reported Dawn.

Pensioners are killing the ANC,’ says Malatji after Mantashe’s Cosatu walkout=
In a recorded video posted on social media while he was on the campaign trail in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, Malatji said the ANC of Oliver Tambo could not be “killed by pensioners” after surviving the apartheid regime. He was reacting to ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe’s walkout at Cosatu’s 15th National Congress on Monday, 12 October, describing his behaviour as “irresponsible and arrogant”. He said Mantashe could not dictate the federation’s programme because he was an invited guest.

Tunisians stage biggest protest in years against President Saied
The demonstration, led by the major UGTT labour union and civil society groups, comes as Tunisia grapples with an economic crisis, worsening public services, recurring water and power cuts, and shortages of medicines and essential goods. Saied seized broad powers in 2021 and 2022, dissolving parliament, dismissing dozens of judges and ruling by decree, moves that opponents described as a coup. Rights groups say he has intensified a crackdown on civil society, journalists and opposition figures. Saied rejects those allegations, saying he is not a dictator, and has accused his opponents of engineering economic crises to fuel social unrest.

Arizona joins Nevada to fight proposed cuts to their shares of Colorado River
The move comes after the interior department announced restrictions this summer that could slash the water supplied to lower basin states – Arizona, California and Nevada – over the next two years depending on the river’s condition. The river’s major reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, have plummeted to historically low levels, due to overuse and a changing climate.

US appeals court blocks class actions over Tesla's self-driving claims
In ‌its ruling, a three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals said there were too many individualized questions about what buyers actually saw before making a purchase, and so they could not sustain their lawsuit as a class action. The appeals court decision is a win for now for Tesla, which had urged the appeals court to vacate orders by a California judge last year certifying three sets of classes. The ruling means the thousands of California buyers the lower court had grouped together cannot, for now, pursue their claims jointly in a single case.

US voters want more action on global heating. Why are Democrats and Republicans staying silent?
Most Americans feel unease or alarm about the climate crisis and, in both red and blue states, want to know how political leaders are going to fix it. But in midterm election campaigns across the US, candidates have responded to this desire with near silence.

DOJ reaches settlement with Mississippi police department it found routinely violated civil rights
The agreement bars the Lexington police from continuing to jail people for unpaid fines without first assessing whether they can afford to pay them, a practice that violates the Fourteenth Amendment. The 2024 report found the city court had issued arrest warrants for more than 650 people, roughly half of the city’s population, for unpaid fines.

In New York, Fewer Than 9,000 Owners Will Pay the Disputed Second-Home Tax
The decline in the number of taxpayers inevitably raises questions about how much revenue the tax will actually generate. The administration continues to project about $500 million a year. Calculations conducted by the New York City Comptroller before the measure took effect, however, showed how heavily the result would depend on exemptions and owners’ behavior. According to that analysis, the tax could approach $500 million under a theoretical scenario, but revenue could fall to between $340 million and $380 million after accounting for homes rented to primary residents and possible responses from owners, such as selling properties or changing how they are used.

A federal civil rights lawsuit filed by South Jersey mother Nadia Baxter accuses Monroe Township police officer Michael Marsh and several institutional defendants of false arrest, malicious prosecution and fabricating evidence. CP of Greece, One hundred ports - one message
On 30 October, one hundred ports across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas are expected to come to a standstill during a coordinated strike, sending the hopeful message that “workers have the power”! This is a major internationalist initiative that takes the torch from the previous International Day of Action on 6 February, when dockworkers protested: “We do not work for war! Ports for the people and for peace - not bases for imperialists.” In Greece, alongside the dockworkers at Piers II and III in Piraeus, seamen and workers in the ship repair Zone, at other shipyards, and at metal factories have decided to join the strike. Initiatives will unfold on the same day in even more sectors and workplaces in both the private and public sectors. This struggle wil be uniting:
  • those who operate the gantry cranes. Who load millions of metric tons of goods, and now business groups are demanding that they “load” raw materials, weapons, and ammunition for the war;
  • the seamen, who set ships in motion all over the world, and today shipowners are sending them to war zones for their own profit, forcing them to sign documents stating that they are putting their lives at risk at their own responsibility;
  • workers who build ships and set the machinery of the metal industry in action. With the shift to a war economy, they are witnessing employers seizing yet another opportunity to demand that workers work without complaint, intensifying exploitation for war purposes. …

Brazil – AND Editorial: Fight the Far Right and Yankee Interference with Action!
Regardless of the outcome of the October 25 election, the country finds itself in a critical situation where its national sovereignty (what remains of it), and the meager democratic rights and fundamental freedoms, hard-won through numerous struggles of the Brazilian people over decades, are threatened. There are two fundamental reasons for this. First: because the country is facing increasing intervention by Yankee imperialism, as outlined in its New National Security Strategy of November 2025, including in this round of general elections. The Yankees want control of strategic mineral reserves, energy sources, and access to strategic territories for their conflict and rivalry with their imperialist rivals, Russia and China – which implies seeking to deploy their troops in Brazil and even attempting to establish bases here. This, incidentally, is not limited to Brazil: the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro in January of this year; direct interference in the elections in Argentina and Colombia to install far-right puppet governments; military operations violating the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Panama; as well as treasonous agreements to station troops and establish military bases in Argentina and Paraguay. Now, it is Brazil’s turn. Trump, just as he has done in all these cases, is showing himself willing to cross every line to ensure the most absolute semicolonial control possible over Brazil as well – and as quickly as possible – which he hopes to achieve through a far-right puppet government. Therefore, the first conclusion we must reach is this: these are not normal elections, but rather a process of interference and severe restriction of the country’s national sovereignty, which is being carried out through blackmail, threats, economic sanctions, various forms of “hybrid” aggression that no election can contain. Rather, they would only legitimize as the work of “popular will” what the Yankees had already imposed on the “battlefield.”

Condition of the Working Class in England by Engels ch10. Labour Movements
It must be admitted, even if I had not proved it so often in detail, that the English workers cannot feel happy in this condition; that theirs is not a state in which a man or a whole class of men can think, feel, and live as human beings. The workers must therefore strive to escape from this brutalising condition, to secure for themselves a better, more human position; and this they cannot do without attacking the interest of the bourgeoisie which consists in exploiting them. But the bourgeoisie defends its interests with all the power placed at its disposal by wealth and the might of the State. In proportion as the working-man determines to alter the present state of things, the bourgeois becomes his avowed enemy. Moreover, the working-man is made to feel at every moment that the bourgeoisie treats him as a chattel, as its property, and for this reason, if for no other, he must come forward as its enemy. I have shown in a hundred ways in the foregoing pages, and could have shown in a hundred others, that, in our present society, he can save his manhood only in hatred and rebellion against the bourgeoisie. And he can protest with most violent passion against the tyranny of the propertied class, thanks to his education, or rather want of education, and to the abundance of hot Irish blood that flows in the veins of the English working-class. The English working-man is no Englishman nowadays; no calculating money-grubber like his wealthy neighbour. He possesses more fully developed feelings, his native northern coldness is overborne by the unrestrained development of his passions and their control over him. The cultivation of the understanding which so greatly strengthens the selfish tendency of the English bourgeois, which has made selfishness his predominant trait and concentrated all his emotional power upon the single point of money-greed, is wanting in the working-man, whose passions are therefore strong and mighty as those of the foreigner. English nationality is annihilated in the working-man.
