France to deploy 70,000 police ahead of new protests
President Emmanuel Macron, who according to aides is postponing a visit later this month to Nigeria and Senegal amid the crisis, held a meeting of his defence council of top ministers and officials and was to meet security forces. He also hosted for the first time representatives of high school pupils, whose protests over conditions at their schools sparked the movement that has broadened into a nationwide show of anger against the government at the rising cost of living.

German youth plan France-style mass protests
Gen Z regelt's website clearly states that the initiative is "against all violence," whether directed at people or property. Police say they are "vigilant and relaxed," adding that they intend to protect people's right to congregate and express their opinions. Still, images of massive damage and public violence from France, Italy and Spain have raised concerns among domestic policymakers and police, who have warned against allowing the protests to be hijacked by left-wing extremists.

Lebanon-Israel talks in US end without breakthrough as attacks continue
Two days of military talks between Lebanon and Israel at the headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida, appear to have ended without a breakthrough, as Israel continues its attacks on southern Lebanon and rejects Lebanese demands for a third-party mechanism to verify the Lebanese army's operations.

Allegations of torture and abuse shadow a Fulani-led vigilante group despite its role in clamping down on kidnappers.
The group’s growing role in fighting kidnapping has also brought the organisation under scrutiny. While some residents credit its members with saving lives, others accuse them of serious abuses. One man says they held him for more than two months and beat him so badly that he lost consciousness. The two accounts reveal the uneasy place occupied by armed community vigilantes in a region where formal security forces have struggled to contain kidnapping and cattle rustling.

De la Espriella sacks interior minister after Congress bungles Colombia’s 2027 budget
The incoming interior minister is an ultra conservative Catholic with ties to the Society of St. Pius X, which considers the modernizing reforms of the Catholic Church heresies and errors, and was declared in a schism with the church in June. In Colombian politics and particularly among the opposition, Ordoñez is mainly remembered as the inspector general who illegally removed former President Gustavo Petro from his post as mayor of Bogota in 2013.

Former Ecuadorian left presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez denounces ‘absurd’ arrest
Ms Gonzalez faces charges of irregular financing of her 2023 presidential campaign, which her supporters say are “lawfare” as the Donald Trump-aligned Daniel Noboa regime represses its political opponents. Lula has asked the Superior Electoral Court to probe his challenger over “improper use” of a social network and disqualify him, and Bolsonaro—an ally of US President Donald Trump—has similarly sought Lula’s disqualification.

Trump administration abandons appeals in fight over student loan forgiveness program
The Education Department wanted to place limits on who could qualify for PSLF, which gives student loan forgiveness to people in government and nonprofit jobs after 10 years of payments. It had sought to bar people at nonprofits who worked on immigration rights and other left-leaning issues, but the move was blocked by a judge over the summer. The Justice Department originally appealed the judge’s decision but on Wednesday agreed to drop the case with little explanation.

Mamdani accuses Amazon of trying to ‘fear-monger’ as he gears up for delivery worker bill showdown
The exchange followed a New York Post report Tuesday that a coalition including the Taxpayers Protection Alliance and American Consumer Institute had written to City Council Speaker Julie Menin urging lawmakers to reject the legislation. According to the Post, the groups warned that the bill could increase costs for businesses, particularly those relying on contracted delivery workers, and ultimately raise prices for consumers.

US supreme court sides with Republicans on rejecting student IDs in New Hampshire midterms
The challenge stemmed from a directive that New Hampshire state officials made earlier this year, which stated student IDs could not be used as a form of identification when voting at the polls, even as a backup under what is known as “safety valve” identification. New Hampshire has required voters to present an ID to vote since 2012, but earlier this year the state’s Republican governor, Kelly Ayotte, signed a law tightening the rules by removing student IDs from the list of standard forms of voter ID.

Barclays is latest to redirect spending toward AI as it trims its workforce
The cost of building out the infrastructure needed to satisfy booming demand for artificial intelligence is changing the way major companies allocate resources. That can mean an end to some jobs once done by humans. Yet in many cases it means repurposing money once spent on workers so that more capital can be devoted to boosting AI capabilities. Just how much money is being spent on AI is a hot topic as fears of a bubble in the sector grow, but the potential impact on workers in some sectors is clear.

Another East Jerusalem neighbourhood is demolished as the world fails to act
Down a track and past a pile of debris, 20 or so well-dressed people are waiting, all diplomats. I am joining them on a trip around al-Bustan, a Palestinian neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem that has been scheduled for demolition. Many homes have been destroyed already. Bustan (“the Orchard”) is to be turned into a car park and recreation ground for settlers - but not for Palestinian residents, who will by then be absent. We stumble past the ruins of what used to be a house. In the garden is a caravan, where we are met by the owner, Fakhri Abu Diab. His wife Ameena, mother of their five children, stands nearby. “They arrived at three in the morning, armed soldiers with black masks putting a gun to my head,” Fakhri recalls of a recent visit. “They took me to interrogation.” On another occasion, they broke Ameena’s glasses. Terrified, she “clenched her jaw so hard that she broke her teeth”. The diplomats shuffle their feet. Fakhri and Ameena, now in their sixties, have lived in Bustan all their lives. Fakhri is chairman of the local residents’ committee, but he won’t be a resident much longer. Their temporary home is scheduled for demolition within 21 days of 4 October, when a new demolition order was pasted on his gate. They don’t know where to go next. “Whenever I hear bulldozers or any machinery, my automatic reaction is that they are coming for us,” Fakhri tells Middle East Eye.

Czech Republic: Leading KSČM members condemn Konečná's alignment with the far right
Kateřina Konečná's decision to join the far-right, xenophobic and anti-communist Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament has triggered fierce criticism within the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM). Leading party cadres, including Vice-Chairman Milan Krajča and Petra Prokšanová, have publicly condemned the move, describing it as a fundamental political error and distancing themselves from the former party chairwoman's decision. In a statement published on Thursday, October 22, Krajča stressed that Patriots for Europe brings together right-wing, anti-communist politicians whose positions include support for efforts to overthrow the revolutionary government of socialist Cuba and for Israel's actions in Gaza. He emphasized that Konečná's decision had never been discussed within the KSČM, declaring: "Personally, I consider it a fundamental political error, and I strongly disagree with it."

Fighting Segregation Means Fighting the System That Produced It
Last month, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize winner for the 1619 Project, published a piece titled “In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?” in which she recounts her daughter Najya’s terrible — and all-too-common — experience in Brooklyn public schools which left her with deficits in foundational academic skills. Her daughter’s frustration with her education forces Hannah-Jones to grapple with the possibility that the decision to enroll her in a predominantly Black and underfunded public school to challenge New York City’s segregated and unequal school system amounted to failing her own child. The article has sparked an important conversation among educators and families about public education, anti-Black racism, school choice, and what it means to fight for Black children in a deeply segregated and unequal school system. It has even prompted a town hall on school integration that Hannah-Jones and Chancellor Kamar Samuels will participate in on Tuesday night. Hannah-Jones shines a light on the daily injustices that Black students face in New York City’s deeply racist and segregated school system, so much so that Mayor Zohran Mamdani went on the Brian Lehrer Show to acknowledge the “systemic nature of the way that the public school system in our city failed her child.”
