Lincoln's ultimate mistake was his moderation. He believed in compromise and mercy. It was in his Christian nature. But he was dealing mercy to people who would have hung him had they won. He ran for his second term on a "national unity" party ticket just for the sake of projecting an air of compromise, and made a southern racist drunk democrat his VP in the same vain. What he really ought to have done was appoint a radical Republican VP like Thaddeus Stevens, and then sent Stevens abroad on diplomatic missions, out of range of Southern assassins. This way, if/when confederates assassinated Lincoln, they would have had to deal with a much more radical alternative. It would have disincentivized the entire assassination plot.
