Student-led Serbian movement ousts right-wing leader Aleksandar Vucic in seismic win
Mr Vucic told supporters at his party’s election night event in Belgrade: “It is now clear that we have lost and the Students’ List has won,” though he blamed the media, alleged interference by unnamed European countries and the “American deep state” for the loss. Radomir Saicic, a Students’ List candidate, said “tonight is not just about results. “It is about people who believed and continued to fight,” he said. “This is a victory over fear. It is nobody’s trophy, it is a citizen’s victory. But victory carries responsibility.”

Berlin’s Plan to Take Back Homes Will Cost Europe’s Biggest Landlord £7bn
Die Linke, which won Berlin’s state elections in September, has agreed to talks with the city’s Greens and Social Democrats as part of plans to transfer ownership of flats from companies that own more than 10,000 apartments, with the legislation scheduled to be brought forward in 2028. Any apartments owned above that 10,000 threshold would have to be transferred into public ownership as part of the policy, with Die Linke proposing an average compensation of around €100,000 per apartment – around 40% below the market value.

‘Still Just a Child’: The Russian Teenagers Fighting and Dying in Ukraine
The pro-war Orthodox Christian VKontakte group Synodik, which has about 50,000 followers, carries dozens of obituaries for soldiers who were teenagers when the invasion began. In Orthodox Christianity, a synodik is a list of names of the living or the dead who are remembered in prayers and church services. Likewise, Synodik’s members pray for Russian soldiers like they would in a real church. The comments, mostly posted by women, are filled with Orthodox prayers, animated images of icons and cross emojis.

Colombia’s government claims Petro exploited 48 women as president
“Forty-eight women are already speaking with us about how, through a contract and an OPS, they were trapped and exploited in order to be with President Petro,” said Rios. Former DAPRE director Angie Rodriguez, who was sacked by Petro in July, doubled down on her successor’s allegations and asked the former president to prove that the president managed a network of women, including child transvestites.

Right-wing Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has followed his imprisoned father's lead by refusing to concede defeat to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who won a historic fourth ‌term in Sunday's presidential election. Adalah attorney Ariel Remez, who led the petition, told The New Arab: "by declining to intervene, the Court has left Palestinian voters exposed to intimidation and placed responsibility for any violence on Election Day on the police and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a minister previously convicted of incitement to racism who has driven the mass arming of Israeli civilians."

Southern California prepares for flooding amid forecast of ‘record-breaking tides’
The National Weather Service warned that significant coastal flooding was expected in San Diego and Orange counties through Thursday that could close roads and inundate homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Some Angelenos, including homeowners and business operators, have paid thousands more than normal this year (some told KTLA that their bills were triple what they usually pay) following what the utility service says was one of the hottest summers on record; one Canoga Park resident on Oct. 20 showed KTLA a past due notice for $24,635.30, while the popular Canter’s Deli in the Fairfax District was hit with a $35,000 bill this summer.

Why are pro-housing groups split on Proposition 45?
Those fissures aren’t over whether more homes should be built across California. Instead, it mostly boils down to a question of where. “The central question here is how you feel about sprawl,” Max Dubler of California YIMBY wrote in the group’s non-endorsement statement, referring to low-density housing development at the edge of metro areas. Though some exurban growth “will necessarily be part of solving our housing shortage,” he expressed concern about making it easier to build “car-dependent sprawl housing and the freeways and water infrastructure necessary to serve that sprawl.”

CP of Greece, The way out for the Greek and all other peoples lies in overthrowing the exploitative system
On Friday 23 October Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE, visited the islands of Kastellorizo and Rhodes. In Kastellorizo, he visited the Island Defense Command of Megisti, where he met with the officers and staff. He also visited the island’s primary school and medical centre, and met with the mayor. In the afternoon, speaking at a KKE rally in Rhodes, he highlighted the dangerous developments in Greek-Turkish relations and the rivalries among the bourgeois classes and imperialist powers in the Eastern Mediterranean. He stated that the KKE opposes “the policy that transforms Greece into an energy and transportation hub and serves the interests of large monopolistic business groups, a policy that has nothing to do with the interests of the Greek people.” He reiterated the KKE’s position on defending the country’s borders and sovereign rights, opposing any change to the borders and the treaties that define them, while also emphasizing the need to foster friendship and solidarity between the peoples of Greece and Turkey.

Serbia's Election: Student-led opposition triumphs, but communist alternative remains absent
According to preliminary results released by Serbia's Electoral Commission, the Student List secured 52.54% of the vote, compared with 39.29% for the Vučić-backed United Serbia coalition. The result followed widespread demonstrations against corruption and government policies, sparked by the deadly railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad in November 2024. Serbia's communist organizations approached the elections from different positions. The Communists of Serbia highlighted the student movement under the slogan “Students Win,” while the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ) participated through the electoral list of the Russian Party, promoting cooperation with Russia and BRICS and opposition to NATO and the European Union. Neither organization, however, entered the electoral contest as an independent communist force presenting a comprehensive socialist alternative. The NKPJ's electoral alliance failed to secure parliamentary representation, while the student-led movement attracted support from a broad assortment of opposition parties with differing political agendas.

Mamdani’s Honeymoon Is Coming to an End for Many on the Left
Increasing taxes on the rich is widely popular among huge swaths of New Yorkers, and, thanks in large part to the movement for Palestine, Israel is more reviled than ever. In fact, Mamdani still remains popular across the city precisely because he continues to espouse these positions. However, a growing sector on the Left, including many of those who helped bring Mamdani to power and many in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is increasingly fed up with the mayor for a whole host of other very legitimate reasons. These include backroom deals with establishment democrats like Kathy Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries, public appearances with President Trump, New York City’s new anti-semtism bill, his deployment of the NYPD against protesters, and his continued refusal to get rid of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch or to disband the NYPD’s hated Strategic Response Group (SRG). These criticisms became even more pronounced earlier this month when Mamdani’s NYPD was deployed to protect and aid ICE agents who had shot a Bronx man with his five year old son in the car. In the press conference after the shooting, Mamdani stood by, without a word of criticism, as Commissioner Tisch rattled off a list of the victim’s previous convictions, as if that justified ICE’s use of force. That shooting came just days after the mayor had been met with jeers by hundreds of demonstrators who called him a “traitor” and a “sell-out” for attending an October 7 memorial service and for allowing the NYPD to arrest pro-Palestinian activists who protested Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the United Nations. Despite all of his bravado that Netanyahu should be arrested, Mamdani neither attended nor encouraged others to attend those protests. Mamdani’s critics — including those from the pro-Palestine movement, the YDSA, and several DSA caucuses — have a point. By seeking to win favor with the powers that be, the mayor has betrayed many of the principles that brought him to office. And those backroom deals failed to produce a first budget able to deliver any meaningful relief to New Yorkers. So, with little to show but compromise and cooptation, it is unsurprising that Mamdani’s critics on the Left and many of his former supporters are becoming more vocal. But there is a fundamental problem with such criticism. It is largely focused on Mamdani as an individual representative and grounded in the assumption that criticizing the mayor is an effective way to move him to the left. ….

The NKPJ and the Russian party are SNS allies. And no opposition parties got any seats, it was just the Student list, which did not give any of the spots on their candidate list to those other parties. The new parliament is composed of just the Student list, the United Serbia list (SNS) and less than 10 minority party seats. And both these communist parties are extremely niche. The anti-capitalist left is generally outside of the political discourse in Serbia, and the prominence of the Student movement might have brought it back a little (because there are left-wing factions in it), but the Student movement itself is not on the anti-capitalist left. If we're judging it based on the Student list's political program, then they are social democrats and somewhat anti-neoliberal.
