Flávio Bolsonaro calls himself the ‘leader of Brazil’ after fleeing to Miami
After landing on a private jet with his family in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday morning, the far-right senator published the claim in a letter – even though his own party has recognised the legitimate victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as have all of Brazil’s institutions, and international observers who monitored and endorsed the vote.

IMF strikes preliminary Argentina deal as market return dims
Still, a key ingredient to Argentina repaying its IMF programme in the long term is its return to international capital markets, which Milei has postponed in hopes of securing lower interest rates. Argentina’s sovereign bonds currently feature yields over 12 percent, which effectively close the window on a return in the near term.

Colombia’s opposition announces criminal charges against De la Espriella over ties to drug traffickers
The president and his appointees are part of a revolving door system of people who, before being appointed to government positions, defended the interests of drug traffickers and paramilitaries associated with De la Espriella and his businesses, according to the opposition leader. For example, the president put Diana Patrica Bravo, a former prosecutor and partner at his law firm De la Espriella Lawyers, in charge of The Society of Special Assets (SAE), which controls assets that were seized from drug traffickers.

France promises to replace its university admissions after riots and thousands of arrests
Ministers also pledged up to 4 billion euros ($4.5 billion) in loans for school renovations, alongside smaller classes, more teaching and higher education posts and increased student grants. The concessions target the school grievances that helped ignite the unrest. But the movement has widened to include workers demanding relief from rising living costs, making the government’s task tougher than simply resolving a dispute over university admissions.

Media groups challenge India’s new privacy law
The media groups told the Indian Supreme Court that the move amounts to pre-censorship and could lead to newsrooms shutting down. A group of 21 news publishers, including companies owned by billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s law on Tuesday, arguing it would trample upon investigative work and allow the government to identify journalists’ sources. Madhavi Goradia Divan, the lawyer for the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), told judges the law “is changing the whole concept of what is news.

Nationalist Regime Supporters Turn Against China Over Northern Shan
The renewed criticism comes after the Shan State Joint Action Committee (SSJAC)—an ethnic coalition comprising the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), and a Shan militia group—issued a statement on Oct. 23 accusing Kokang’s Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) of imposing Chinese language in schools, granting land rights to foreigners, and erasing local traditions in territories it seized during Operation 1027. The MNDAA swiftly rejected the allegations as unfounded. Earlier this month, Shan civil society organizations released an open letter warning that the MNDAA’s cultural and administrative practices threaten ethnic coexistence and the stability of the China–Myanmar border.

Feds agree to environmental study for proposed Bridgeport Amtrak maintenance facility
The dispute is over a 60-acre freight yard along Canal Street between 33rd and 35th streets, which Amtrak, backed by multi-million dollar federal grant, wants to turn into a massive 24-hour passenger coach and maintenance hub. The project was originally granted a categorical exclusion, meaning it could bypass rigorous environmental checks, but now the Federal Railroad Administration reversed that and is now requiring a formal environmental assessment.

Karen Bass, Nithya Raman tied in Los Angeles mayor's race, new poll shows
A Berkeley IGS/L.A. Times poll released Wednesday shows Bass and Raman each have 40% support. The poll also finds that 19% of voters are still undecided in the race.Back in September, Raman had an 11-point lead. But according to the new poll, Bass has erased that advantage. The Times attributes that change to inroads Bass has made by winning over voters who backed Spencer Pratt in the June primary.

13 European Communist Youth organizations hail student protests, back dockworkers' strike
“The Communist Youth organizations signing this statement salute the tremendous mobilizations of school students, university students and young workers that have taken place in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Albania and other European countries in recent weeks, fighting for education, work and a life that meets the possibilities offered by the 21st century. The great waves of young people surging through the streets of Europe are creating images of optimism and hope. They demonstrate that the organized people, through their struggle, can leave their mark on developments. We denounce the repression unleashed by the bourgeois states, resulting in injuries to demonstrators, including school students, thousands of arrests, and attempts to slander these struggles. It is once again confirmed that anti-people policies are necessarily accompanied by repression, alongside efforts to manipulate the people. We, the young communists, stand on the front line of this struggle, highlighting that the causes driving young people into the streets are common. They lie in the EU of monopolies and war preparations, which allocates billions to military armaments and to boosting the profits of business groups in their competition with rival centers, while treating the needs of the people and youth as ‘wasteful’ and a ‘cost’. They lie in the system of exploitation and class barriers, which sacrifices the needs of workers, young people and working-class families every day in the interests of a handful of capitalists."

DSA Is Eyeing a 2028 AOC Presidential Run
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is entering a new phase. After decades on the political margins, DSA has helped elect a socialist mayor of New York City, won a string of congressional primaries, and grown to over 130,000 members. Now, as chapters across the country call for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to run for president in 2028, the organization faces a crucial test of how to turn its growing popularity into national political power. There are encouraging signs that DSA is rising to the occasion. From Los Angeles and Chicago to smaller communities like Ithaca and Wichita, chapters have passed resolutions urging AOC to run. Last weekend, Bread and Roses — a caucus I am a member of and that within DSA’s national leadership often holds the balance of power between the organization’s different political wings — voted overwhelmingly to join the effort to draft her. DSA’s national leadership has also approved a process that could allow an endorsement early in 2027, rather than waiting until its summer convention. None of this means the organization is united, or that its remaining disagreements are trivial. But the trend is clear: more socialists are coming around to the possibility of a national campaign capable of reaching millions of working people.

Flávio Bolsonaro Is Defeated, but the Fight Against Brazil’s Far Right Continues
All signs pointed to a Lula defeat: no first-round winner had ever lost the runoff, and most of the parties that ran in the first round but not the second were right-wing and likely to give more votes to Flávio. This victory goes far beyond Lula and his electoral and governing coalition known as the Broad Front. In fact, it came despite this “anyone but Bolsonaro” big-tent coalition. The Broad Front preserved many of the anti-worker policies of previous administrations, including those implemented by Jair Bolsonaro. And the coalition maintained a policy of class conciliation towards the Far Right and big business, which helped strengthen the social base of Bolsonarism and contain working-class mobilizations. Lula’s victory on Sunday was instead the result of the massive, youth-led mobilizations that swept the country in the lead-up to the election. With millions standing up to Bolsonarism in the streets and on social media, these were the largest protests since June 2013. These massive mobilizations also forced an important labor reform, known as the end of the six-day work week — the so-called “6×1” schedule. Brazil’s Congress approved the constitutional amendment in mid-October, with the new rules set to take effect in mid-December. Flávio’s defeat comes despite imperialist interference in the elections, particularly from his ally, Donald Trump. The U.S. president used tariffs and threats against embassies and consulates to sway the vote for Flávio. For Trump, a far-right victory in Brazil would have served as a key foothold for his “Donroe Doctrine”: his policy of imperialist subjugation of Latin America as part of the strategic competition with China. Meta also helped tip the scales toward Bolsonaro by restricting the reach of Lula’s campaign. Interference also came from Bolsonarist sectors. On the day of the election, cities with mayors linked to Bolsonaro restricted public transit, forcing the Supreme Court to extend voting by an hour. Even so, many polling places closed early, with military police stationed at voting sites.
