Dockworkers and activists block ports across the world in protest against war, genocide and the arms trade
Strike organisers the No Harbour for Genocide campaign, alongside dockworkers’ unions in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, Morocco and Cyprus, described today’s events as the largest co-ordinated port action ever held. “For one day, 52,000 containers stand idle, carrying $2.8 billion (£2bn) worth of goods, before the next day’s backlog, the work stoppages and the general strike in Italy are counted,” No Harbour for Genocide campaign said in an Instagram post today.

Elbit factory targeted in Palestine Action raid was set to deliver 'immediate shipment of drones' to Israel, court hears
Five defendants - Qesser Zuhrah, 21, Zahra Farooque, 26, Kamran Ahmed, 29, Heba Muraisi, 31, and Liam Mullany, 34 - are facing charges of criminal damage and violent disorder at Woolwich Crown Court in connection with the break-in at an Elbit Systems factory in Filton, near Bristol, on 6 August 2024. Giving evidence this week, Zuhrah, who said she helped coordinate the action, told jurors that she had first heard of the Filton site when others in the group raised concerns "about an immediate shipment of weapons" set to leave the factory and that, as a result, the action had been "speedtracked".

Germany and France brace for protests on Halloween weekend
Police plan to deploy thousands of additional officers across the country. Some luxury jewellery shops and clothing stores have boarded up windows to protect against potential looting or violence. Protests in Germany are led by a group dubbed “GenZ regelt!”, which translates to “Gen Z has got this!”. The German protest movement’s complaints include the high cost of living, poorly maintained schools, government spending cuts and, more broadly, politicians taking decisions with little regard for the younger generation.

Israel: Tibi urges Eisenkot to show 'courage' and form minority government with Palestinians
Palestinian lawmaker Ahmad Tibi has urged Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot to show political courage and work with Arab parties to end Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rule. In an interview with Middle East Eye on Friday, Tibi called on Eisenkot to summon “the courage of [former prime minister] Yitzhak Rabin”. In 1993, Rabin’s minority government of 56 seats relied on Palestinian-led parties for parliamentary support, amid the push to advance the Oslo Accords.

‘We’re not freaks’: police raid sparks concern for Taiwan’s LGBT-friendly image
Josh was having a drink at Commander D, a popular gay bar in Taipei, on a Saturday afternoon when several police officers suddenly burst in. “Squat down and don’t move,” they shouted. Bewildered, he looked around to see the bar owner being handcuffed and forced to his knees. The 28-year-old was among 51 customers to be rounded up and taken away for questioning over suspected breaches of public decency rules.

Democratic lawmakers demand ICE data on detainee miscarriages
Government documents obtained by the Guardian found that ICE had placed more pregnant immigrants in detention last fall and winter than at any time over the previous year. The agency recorded 18 miscarriages during the first nine months of the Trump administration, the documents found, but the agency has no data on miscarriages after 3 October 2025.

Justice Department requests separating Alaska ballots that rank Dan J. Sullivan in Senate race
Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward wrote in a court filing that state officials should “preserve and segregate all ballots ranking Daniel J. Sullivan for the purposes of investigating whether such ranking was the product of voter confusion, should such an investigation become necessary.” “These modest precautionary measures will be impossible after Election Day, so there is good cause for expedited consideration,” he added.

How Mamdani canceled ‘Cop City’
That plan dates back to 2017, when then-Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city would budget $100 million to build a state-of-the-art correction academy. And in 2021, months before he left office, de Blasio announced they’d build it next to the police academy. The city still hadn’t broken ground in 2024, when Adams announced he’d expanded the plans to train not just correction officers, but all the city’s smaller law enforcement teams, like sanitation and parks.

4 more activists charged in intimidation campaign against University of Michigan over Israel ties
The new indictment comes nearly five months after eight pro-Palestinian activists were charged with conspiracy for threats and vandalism at officials’ homes, some businesses and the Jewish Federation of Detroit. Investigators have highlighted several incidents over the past few years, including fake bloody corpses that were placed in a university board member’s yard, and the 2024 spray-painting of anti-Israel messages at the home of Santa Ono, who was school president at the time.

It’s time for the left to stand up to Burnham
Far from offering real hope to working people it opens up the prospect of increasing immiseration in the years to come. Far from breaking with the bond market veto over economic policy, it was designed to appease the speculators. Since Andy Burnham’s election many people in the labour movement have argued to suspend judgement on his intentions, to “give him a chance.” That is understandable – Burnham appears the last chance of a Labour Party morally and politically eviscerated by Keir Starmer, and the only thing standing between Britain and a hard-right authoritarian and racist government. But such goodwill cannot be extended indefinitely. John Healey’s measures – or striking lack of them – mark the moment when conclusions must start to be drawn.

The Andreas Malm Ban Shows How to Blow Up a Democracy
The banning of Malm’s ETA comes only four months after Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur, two American leftwing political commentators, had their ETAs cancelled shortly before scheduled appearances at SXSW London and the Oxford Union. The then-Keir Starmer government similarly invoked a ‘public good’ argument. What’s more, it was only this month that it was announced that celebrated author Sally Rooney would no longer be able to sell books in the UK, due to her statements of support for proscribed group Palestine Action. While the Home Office does its seeming best to avoid offering specific public explanations for why certain public figures are being barred from entering the UK, you can guarantee that there will be a briefing operation afoot. When Piker and Uygur had their ETAs withdrawn, the media (rather than rallying around the cause of free expression, on which our livelihoods depend) preferred instead to jaw-jaw about whether the two men were antisemitic. I do not doubt that, over the course of today, Malm’s public comments about the legally enshrined right of Palestinians to resist Israeli occupation will find their way into journalist’s briefing notes.

A Palestinian Prisoner on the Nightmare Behind Israeli Bars Interview with Khalida Jarrar
In 2014, when the Israeli army ordered Jarrar’s expulsion from Ramallah to Jericho, she refused and lived for a month in a protest tent until the order fell. In 2015, twelve charges against her amounted to political acts: speeches, attending a book fair, and visiting a released prisoner. In 2021, during yet another detention, her daughter Suha, a thirty-one-year-old researcher, died suddenly — and Israel denied her mother a farewell. Israeli forces arrested her for the fifth time in the early hours of December 26, 2023, the day before she was due to publicly present a study on Israel’s abuses against Palestinian prisoners during the genocide in Gaza. Thirteen months of administrative detention followed. She spent the last six in total isolation, in a cell two and a half meters by one, without a window or ventilation. Prison authorities moved her there days after Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, visited Damon Prison. When she asked why, a guard replied: “You will not know the reason for your isolation, nor how long it will last.” She walked out on January 19, 2025, in the first prisoner exchange of the ceasefire. The conversation below took place in English, in mid-August. Israel’s doctrine of destroying refugee camps is spreading from the northern West Bank to the gates of Jerusalem. Israel voted in legislative elections on October 27, and Palestinians face elections in November that many do not believe in. Against this backdrop, Jarrar talks about prisons and libraries, about imperialism and oxygen — and about what a person does, locked alone in a darkened cell, in order not to go mad.
