SACP emerges as surprise performer in 2026 LGE after ANC split
The South African Communist Party (SACP) is emerging as one of the surprise performers in the 2026 local government elections after contesting separately from its long-time alliance partner, the African National Congress (ANC). Early results show the SACP polling particularly strongly in the Eastern Cape, where it has secured more than 6% of the vote, and is third behind the ANC and the Democratic Alliance (DA), while outperforming both the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The party is also recording encouraging support in Limpopo and the North West.

Arab-led Joint List says it will back Eisenkot to form Israel's next government
The alliance, which comprises three Arab-led factions, said its decision came despite the opposition's failure to sufficiently challenge Netanyahu's political direction, incitement against Arab citizens and attempts to undermine the legitimacy of their electoral choices. However, the endorsements do not necessarily mean the Arab parties will join an Eisenkot-led government. The Joint List has said it is prepared to support an opposition government from outside the governing coalition, rather than take ministerial positions.

The announcement came a day after the regional parliament met for the first time after nearly two years of political paralysis. The session was boycotted by the PUK and allied parties that had pushed for the KDP to postpone it until a consensus could be reached on the allocation of top government positions.

Milei links socialism to fascism in speech in front of Spainish PM Sánchez
A central theme was his contention that socialism and fascism share the same characteristics. Drawing on a phrase attributed to writer and diplomat Salvador de Madariaga, he declared: “Socialism is fascist in politics and fascism is socialist in economics.” “Both doctrines (socialism and fascism) concentrate control over individual decisions in the hands of a minority and make economic dependence an instrument of political domination,” he continued. “The fascist maxim, everything within the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State, describes socialist states,” Milei said.

AIPAC hails US midterm wins despite costly election defeats
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has claimed victory for hundreds of candidates in the US midterm elections, despite spending millions to bolster pro-Israel politicians and suffering high-profile defeats at the hands of candidates critical of Washington's military support for Israel. In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, the powerful pro-Israel lobby said "more than 234 candidates supported by AIPAC members" had won, with additional races still undecided.

Citibank office shooter targeted company over a $2,500 debt collection, Florida sheriff says
About three hours before Wednesday’s shooting, Jacob Pearson called an attorney affiliated with Citibank and threatened violence, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister told a news conference. On the phone, Pearson demanded that the lawyer cancel a court hearing over Pearson’s unpaid credit card debt “unless you want me to go over there with my AR-15, my bulletproof vest and my insanity,” Chronister said.

Division among US Democrats over Schumer’s leadership role
The Democratic leader said on Wednesday the party’s new Senate plan would include launching investigations into the Trump administration, challenging the president’s agenda and ending his war in Iran. However, that’s not good enough for some current members, like Van Hollen, who recently told Bloomberg that Democrats should not commit to Schumer without promises of a “bold agenda”.

Rep-elect Valdez not decided on Jeffries support, projects Democratic unity
Valdez was one of a slate of three NYC progressives who won Democratic primaries after Mamdani endorsed them over more establishment-oriented picks. Rep-elect Brad Lander has said he will support Jeffries’ bid for speaker. Rep-elect Darializa Avila Chevalier has taken a similar non-committal stance as Valdez. Several other progressive Democrats also won nationally, potentially bulking up their power in the next Congress. Valdez said leftist candidates from coast to coast deserve the lion’s share of credit for the landslide because they ran on messages of economic populism

Opponents have raised alarms the measure may force girls to endure “invasive and extreme” genital exams to participate in school sports. Initiative 638 passed with support from nearly 57% of voters as of Thursday morning, though votes were still being counted.

California billionaires faced down a tax and won new protections for their wealth
The proponents of a California billionaire tax didn’t just lose their campaign to impose a first-in-the-nation tax on wealthy people’s assets. They also appear to have lost a campaign that will make it harder for them to try again in the future. Proposition 42, which prohibits new taxes on personal property such as business holdings, intellectual property and financial assets, is leading by a wide margin at 54% with nearly 60% of anticipated votes counted. It was one of two measures that tech billionaires placed on the ballot in an effort to cancel out the wealth tax.

Italian workers mobilise against backdrop of political rethinking and economic stagnation
LAST weekend saw demonstrations in over 50 cities and towns in Italy. This testifies to the strength of feeling against the Meloni government but also to the organisational and political reach of the Unione Sindicale di Base (USB), which has been prominent among the so-called base unions that fill the gap left by the existing union confederations. These, to one degree or another, are integrated into the system of social partnership at the practical if not the official level and into the EU’s consensus. This neoliberal orthodoxy straddles the middle ground in Italian politics and increasingly the Meloni administration. It is not by accident that this nationwide mobilisation is taking place at the same time as diverse sectors in other countries are taking to the streets. Also significant last weekend were the actions by port workers across four continents that linked the economic demands of workers throughout the capitalist world with the campaign against war and arms exports. The most powerful anti-war dock strikes took place in the Mediterranean ports. In France, the CGT-led actions in 24 ports; USB and Orsa Porti struck in nine Italian ports; while in 10 Greek and three Turkish ports strikes were effective. Various actions took place in Tangier, the Basque country, Spain and Cyprus while bad weather stalled strikes in 11 Indian ports. That Palestinian flags are ubiquitous whenever people take to the streets is a sign that a fissure is opening up everywhere the drive to profit dominates. The red thread running through these events is the “cost of life” but wider demands, especially against precarity, austerity and war manifest themselves.

Thoughts on the Midterms: Chris Hedges
The Democrats may have taken control of the House and the Senate, they may have humiliated Donald Trump and the Republican Party, but the real fight is only beginning. It is not simply a battle to hold the corrupt Trump regime to account, something that can only be done if the Democrats are willing to overcome their reluctance to carry out impeachment proceedings against the president. It is as well a battle to sweep away the corporate-indentured hierarchy of the Democratic Party, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. The Democratic Party, since the presidency of Bill Clinton, who gave us NAFTA, the greatest betrayal of the working class since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, and gutted programs such as Welfare, is a more polished version of corporate and oligarchic rule, abjectly subservient to the war machine, the Israel lobby and their funders in the billionaire class. The country is broken. Corruption, in both parties, is endemic. Federal agencies have been gutted and destroyed.

Inside Rouvikonas’ Push to Build a Nationwide Movement
Best known for its direct actions in Greece’s capitol city, the anti-authoritarian collective Rouvikonas has increasingly expanded beyond Athens. Over the past year, the collective has established a presence in Thessaloniki and Larissa, as well as in other parts of the country. Their expansion, which includes mutual aid projects and volunteer firefighting, comes as they face new challenges including state repression. Greek Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis recently described Rouvikonas as a “criminal organization,” arguing that its activities warranted consolidating criminal case files across the country, as had been done in the case of Golden Dawn. Rouvikonas has rejected the characterization, describing the government’s actions as another attack by the Greek state who is attempting to quell their popular buildup. Unicorn Riot sat down with several members of the collective to learn more – see the video below.
