Hope Is Winning Everywhere But HereWith eyes on politics internationally, it’s hard not to feel hope-pilled this week after Donald Trump and the Republican party received a historic battering in the US midterms. The president told voters to pretend he was on the ballot. They used the opportunity to raise a middle finger to him, Elon Musk – who set fire to a cool $446m backing Senate candidates that lost – and AI data centres. The midterms’ “bluenami”, along with Lula’s stunning win in Brazil and the student-led movement that defeated Serbia’s Aleksandar Vučić, represent a wave of progressive victories globally. So why does the landscape at home feel so… grey?

An Eisenkot-led government. The Zionist “Change Bloc” parties have stated they will recommend Gadi Eisenkot. With the 19 seats on the Joint List and Ra’am Islamic party, he has 67 recommendations and would almost certainly receive the first mandate: 28 days to form a coalition, with a possible 14-day extension. Without the parties representing the Arab-Palestinian citizens and the Jewish democratic forces, his bloc cannot reach 61. Eisenkot said he seeks the broadest possible “Zionist government”, which sits uneasily with this arithmetic. A unity government with Netanyahu. Eisenkot has so far rejected serving under Netanyahu, including in a rotation arrangement. A reversal would entrench the very policies that brought the country to crisis and would entirely discredit the anti-Netanyahu camp in the next elections, whether in a year or more. A Netanyahu-led government. His bloc is eight seats short, and its cohesion, especially with the ultra-Orthodox parties, is no longer certain. This scenario is possible only if there will be defection from the counter bloc. This is the least likely path, but it cannot be ruled out. New elections. If no coalition forms within the constitutional deadlines of 90-days, Israel returns to the polls. This is what Netanyahu desires and is aiming at. The Communist Party of Israel (CPI) and Hadash will do everything within their power to prevent this and to translate the electoral results into the removal of the current government, while remaining ready for every eventuality – new elections included.

The proletarian sees in both only the property-holder – i.e., the bourgeois. Before the privilege of property all other privileges vanish. The sole difference is this, that the bourgeois proper stands in active relations with the manufacturing, and, in a measure, with the mining proletarians, and, as farmer, with the agricultural labourers, whereas the so-called aristocrat comes into contact with the agricultural labourer only.
I have never seen a class so deeply demoralised, so incurably debased by selfishness, so corroded within, so incapable of progress, as the English bourgeoisie; and I mean by this, especially the bourgeoisie proper, particularly the Liberal, Corn Law repealing bourgeoisie. For it nothing exists in this world, except for the sake of money, itself not excluded. It knows no bliss save that of rapid gain, no pain save that of losing gold. In the presence of this avarice and lust of gain, it is not possible for a single human sentiment or opinion to remain untainted. True, these English bourgeois are good husbands and family men, and have all sorts of other private virtues, and appear, in ordinary intercourse, as decent and respectable as all other bourgeois; even in business they are better to deal with than the Germans; they do not higgle and haggle so much as our own pettifogging merchants; but how does this help matters? Ultimately it is self-interest, and especially money gain, which alone determines them. I once went into Manchester with such a bourgeois, and spoke to him of the bad, unwholesome method of building, the frightful condition of the working-peoples quarters, and asserted that I had never seen so ill-built a city. The man listened quietly to the end, and said at the corner where we parted: "And yet there is a great deal of money made here, good morning, sir." It is utterly indifferent to the English bourgeois whether his working-men starve or not, if only he makes money. All the conditions of life are measured by money, and what brings no money is nonsense, unpractical, idealistic bosh. Hence, Political Economy, the Science of Wealth, is the favourite study of these bartering Jews. Every one of them is a Political Economist. The relation of the manufacturer to his operatives has nothing human in it; it is purely economic. The manufacturer is Capital, the operative Labour. And if the operative will not be forced into this abstraction, if he insists that he is not Labour, but a man, who possesses, among other things, the attribute of labour-power, if he takes it into his head that he need not allow himself to be sold and bought in the market, as the commodity "Labour", the bourgeois reason comes to a standstill. He cannot comprehend that he holds any other relation to the operatives than that of purchase and sale; he sees in them not human beings, but hands, as he constantly calls them to their faces; he insists, as Carlyle says, that "Cash Payment is the only nexus between man and man." Even the relation between himself and his wife is, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, mere "Cash Payment". Money determines the worth of the man; he is "worth ten thousand pounds". He who has money is of "the better sort of people", is "influential", and what he does counts for something in his social circle.
