Why do some people seem to believe that everyone is innately bisexual? I've seen this claim every now and then online, and apparently some prominent bisexuals (e.g. Gore Vidal, Billie Joe Armstrong) believe(d) it. I've even heard it twice IRL; the second time, a lesbian acquaintance of mine said something along the lines of "I'm gay enough that I know straight people aren't lying about being straight", which I concurred with in my head (although I said nothing). Personally, I'm a gay guy, or at least that's what I call myself, but there have been a few rare instances where I briefly wondered whether I actually am attracted to women, only minimally and/or while repressing it, and although I have always ultimately concluded that I am just gay, it does make me think about the idea that everyone is actually just at some point or another on a spectrum of bisexuality. That being said, it still seems highly improbable to me. What are your thoughts?
unless you believe in some very strict sexual determinism, people have the "material conditions" to be bisexual: there is no physical obstacle stopping anyone from being bisexual. so sexual orientation is always, to some extent, a self-imposed restraint

That's not really "being" bisexual though, since you can engage in sexual behavior with someone without being attracted to them. Anyone is free to "act" bisexual, but it doesn't necessarily make them bisexual in orientation, no?
these kinds of confusion occur because many, perhaps most people, have a tendency to reify language into a perfect and interchangeable analog to reality. they think the word is what the thing is and vice versa. instead of treating language as merely a tool with which to think and study and describe and understand the world, they use it as a substitute for thought itself and offload all of their cognition onto the words which they simply accept at face value without ever questioning or even considering their true meaning, or understanding that they are merely arrows or signposts and not the destination itself.
There's a scale for a reason. If you include the definition of "bisexual" to include anybody who experiences attraction of any degree to both sexes, then a lot of people who identify as straight or gay and live their lives according to those labels would probably qualify. However I don't think everybody would, and a lot of those that do would probably be pretty restricted in their tastes. The classic example of course is a guy that likes twinks but is otherwise straight.

Wrong question. The correct question wouldbe: why do bisexuals, especially repressing ones, so often engage in sexual solipcism, i. e. the projection of their entire sexuality onto all of humanity when they are part of a sexual minority that should know better.

The question is why is this behavior so common among bisexuals who should know better because after all they themselves should be, as a sexual minority in a heteronormative society, have at least some experience with having another sexual orientation, the dominante one, projected onto them.
Certain queer people huff copium that secretly they're the actual dominant sexuality and three quarters of population just don't realise it.

You know, I used to think I was bisexual. Then I realised it was just comphet. But I do think it is best to see it as a spectrum.
i've seen way too many men with wives and kids kiss and grope eachother as a "joke".
i've seen way too many women kiss eachother, live together and for one another. complain about men, about male sexuality, with some weirdos on the internet even saying "kill all men". yet they date them anyway.
my mother, totally straight and born and raised a child, keeps saying things like "real love is only between girls" and that "girls kiss eachother" all the time (slightly different meaning in my native language)
i think most of these people just do what's expected of them by society and never imagined themselves in a position of "i'm attracted to the same sex" – even if they know homosexual people exist, have thought about their existance, how such a relationship could function and they have absolutely no problem with that.
