Most of it certainly was racism, but the other hand was many of them were so dumb and uneducated that they truly believed black people were inferior
If we make like the kind of stuff Julia Serano and Forest Valkai pushes in mainstream highschool level education I'm sure we'd have less of these issues, as with any sort of social issue education and political lines solve them
