Saudi Arabia is a product of the west and it's the one exporting Wahhabism. Iran used to be a secular democracy but because their leader wanted to nationalize the oil the US/Britain overthrew him. Saddam and Assad may have been dictators but they were at least secular, and the west took them out.
So any discussion of Islam has to start with that first.

Islam just like all religions will fade away naturally as socialism grows, its traditions and culture will stay but its religion will fade. But in the meantime I have no problem with Islam as long as it is separated from government.

The problem with pinkwashing theory is that it assumes that imperial powers misuse and abuse queerness as an excuse, it lets queerness of the hook. Given that queer identity arose in the West, shouldn't we also ask how the dominant ideas of what it means to be queer are tied up with imperialism and bourgeois? Why for example does the erasures of Native American cultures, with their own complex sexual practices, never feature in historical discussions around Western sexuality? A read of this thread suggests something interesting. There's a sense that 1. Religion is anti-queer 2. That Muslims are only reactionary because of Saudis. In other words, Muslims are judged by the extent to which they approximate a Western queer value system, their capacity to prove they are civilized. In the article another anon linked there was a question directed to a Palestinian scholar about grindr use in Hebron, and he pushes back by saying "well let's talk about the occupation first." But why should Palestinians be judged by the ability to use some hook up app?

Most of those were patriarchal adaptions (like pederastic "boywives") or marginal religious roles. The people looking for historical incarnations of themselves are missing the point though. There is no pre-modern, historical precedent for lgbtiaq+ as it exists in contemporary society and by design it can barely exist outside of it. Queer identity is accelerationist either way.

There's an irony that Western queers are anti-normative, but when it comes to foreign sexual cultures they don't understand they are obsessed with asserting their moral superiority and imposing their own normativity onto them. LGBT is held up as a sort of end stage of queer history, the final model the whole world must evolve towards. Anything that doesn't align with it is branded reactionary or patriarchal or marginal. Why should they be dismissed as reactionary or regressive? This issue requires nuance because the critical context is omitted: the conquest of Islamic peoples by imperialism.

I'm really not interested in that, which is a problem by itself. What bugs me is why do historians of sexuality in the West (e.g. Foucualt) omit colonialism? LGBT identity was invented in the West, but how this construction was shaped by the project to heterosexualize Native Americans or colonize Algeria is simply never asked. All we get are "the British spread anti-gay laws" but no real concern for how gay culture was shaped by the reality of conquest e.g. the Arab Islamic East was often portrayed as a place of barbaric sexual perversion, as a safe haven for homosexuals, as a sex tourism destination for gay men in the 70s, as a place that needed to modernize through heterosexualization.

Patriarchy has been the dominant mode of social reproduction in every sedentary society, most of the surviving tribal communities even, ever since it ostensibly spread during the neolithic in the form of sun worship. The fact colonialism forced western gender relations on non-western nations, and similar to christianity specifically utilized them to control and assimilate the local populace, today represents more a historical quirk than any real difference in sex relations.

Lgbt is the product of both lessened material pressure and sharpened cultural contradictions. A return towards "sane" sex roles or sex without gender is no longer possible, therefore anti-lgbt sentiment is a form of superstition. Materially it is entirely unsubstantiated and should only be endorsed tactically. Similarly, instead of advocating for a wholesale restoration of pre-colonial religion, any principled communist should seek to promote atheism instead.
