It's a result of ages of right-wing voters consuming propaganda at a pace that's not possible to be digested properly through normal means - the subconscious reinterprets vague links and buzzwords into a coherent "gay men are pedos" message, while the conscious mind simply cannot process it. These people *can't* send you any credible statistics or articles that would back up their claims - because they don't exist. They've been hearing these claims for over 30 years and it's become an integral part of their internal meta-narrative. Their political viewpoints are now based *upon* the idea that LGBTQ+ people are the ultimate evil of the 21st century, not vice versa.
To put it simply, it's memetic warfare at it's finest.
