I have a guess that an opportunist aversion to "culture wars" in Marxism-Leninism developed in reaction to the anarchists and Bismarckian kulturekampf. Also there was the issue of the lumpenproletariat. Lenin diagnosed this opportunism in the German Social Democrats quite easily. But criticizing your own position is harder. I think you also see a similar split with the CNT in regards to anti-clericalism. Of course, secular misogyny and homophobia is a thing. But I think that there's a direct link between differences over anti-clericalism and later homophobia in the MLs. It's weird that the MLs also developed strong policies of state atheism sometimes as well. But I think that it still goes back to factional divides between liberal radicalism, anarchism and Marxism over issues of anti-clericalism and the lumpenproletariat.
