I never heard anyone say this.

I don't think it's so much a demand-for-skill thing, but a novelty thing. Classic folk is gentle and simple; musically and lyrically and conceptually, and doesn't scare the hoes like newer folk can–Andrew Jackson Jihad for example–but you get a little worn out on the same song after a while, especially when it's catchy (sticks in your head), and at least from my own childhood experience kids seem to get exposed to a pretty limited pallete of it leading to a bad impression of it.

Newer stuff incorperates a bit of modern musical techniques. Yeah it takes a bit more skill to play kinda, but it's jazzy (having been made during a time where jazz exists) and it's fun to hear something you haven't heard yet. I think you could still get a community to sing the newer folk stuff with a bit more patience.

It's old ass royalty free music that it's used in a lot of children's toys and cartoons, hence the association of it with kiddie stuff. Same with a lot of "cliche" classical music like Cancan, Fur Elise and Entrance of the Gladiators
