I started learning Mandarin in a very unorthodox way, that is with characters first. I used a great Anki deck that had 800 basic chars. Later on, I entered into a study abroad program, but due to covid, it was all online faggotry. I did learn a lot though, and still have some of my tutors from then added on WeChat.
If possible, you should try to do a study abroad thing in Taiwan, or some other west-friendly place whose national language is Mandarin.
Also, a word of advice, don't get too wrapped up in whether to learn traditional or simplified chars, just start learning whichever makes most sense for you (if you want to go to Taiwan, learn traditional first). They aren't very different, and with a reasonable amount of general experience, you won't even consciously notice a different between them when reading after a while.
