This would actually work out fine because 1) the fact that even the ugliest person of your preferred gender is still handsome means you don't have to settle appearance-wise and 2) there's bound to be at least a few handsome people of your competing gender who will be too shy to pursue people of your preferred gender, which would leave at least a few of the latter for the taking.
