I never understood why Norse, Celtic and Slavic neopaganisms/polytheisms are more popular than Greek/Roman polytheism among normgroids given how Greek and Roman antiquity always enjoyed a high cultural status in American high culture (especially among academics) to the point that virtually every fraternity and sorority having Greek letters as its names is a product of the high status put on the ancient Greek (and by extension Latin) language in American elite institutions like Harvard and Yale. And let’s not talk about how Greek and Roman mythos are more well-documented and freer from Christian influences compared to the poetic Edda that forms the basis of modern wotanism/odinism (which was written when Norse and Christian beliefs coexisted side by side), Celtic neopaganism (whose most of so-called “traditions” actually date back to 18th century romantic writers) and Slavic neopaganism (wherein 99% of its belief system is either based on biased Soviet archeology or made up by its adherents because Slavs adopted Christianity by the time they became literate). And let’s not talk about Baltic neopaganism, which is even worse in that regard.
I think a lot of it has to do with the 1970s counterculture leading to a raising interest for eastern mysticism and “non-elite cultures” like Norse and Celtic cultures idealised to be pro-rural and idyllic as opposed to elite Christianity and Hellenism. It’s not really a stretch since the Lord Of The Rings books were treated as idealistic slop by the British literary press when they were first published, and it would take more than a decade for them to be popular thanks to hippies who interpreted it as a pro-agrarian and anti-urban and anti-tech book (and the widespread adoption of the cheap paperback format that made books more accessible to normies).
Just a hunch, but I always found it weird how other European polytheisms overtook America instead of Hellenism which has a more documented history and tradition, as well as having enjoyed high status in elite’s imaginations due to the influence of classicism in western philosophy and academic culture since the European renaissance.
