I recently started therapy as a treatment for my severe depression and anxiety.
My therapist threw a bunch of current psycho babble. I asked if it would be beneficial to read more, and he gave me a list of 3 books.
doing a cursory glance at the authors, it became clear that it was just a bunch of liberal pop-psychology. It baffles me that there are therapists actually treating people on this.
>Gabor Maté
<Gabor Maté posits that cancer is often the physical manifestation of chronic, subconscious stress, emotional repression, and early life trauma rather than just genetics. He argues that a "disease-prone personality"—characterized by excessive caregiving, suppressing anger, and inability to say "no"—undermines the immune system.
<His assertion that ADHD is a result of trauma, not genetic factors, is highly criticized. Critics note this ignores substantial research demonstrating a strong genetic basis for ADHD and can blame parents.
<Joe Rogan podcast guest.
>Richard C. Schwartz
<Former patients alleged that clinicians at Castlewood, which specialized in eating disorders, used unethical techniques to implant memories of ritual abuse and satanic cults.
>Brene Good
<Critics argue that Brown’s work often focuses on individual emotions rather than addressing systemic racism, sexism, and class, which causes shame.
<There are allegations that Brown has failed to adequately credit Black and queer feminists for concepts surrounding vulnerability and shame.
All of them face backlash for the lack of scientific rigor in their models.
I'm worried I might be too savvy to partake in these therapy sessions, even though I know I desperately need something of the sort.
The main question I have now, is if there's anything scientific about psychology at all, or is it just vibes based treatment?
yeah it's all bullshit just keep suffering and torturing yourself
read Jung
>The main question I have now, is if there's anything scientific about psychology at all, or is it just vibes based treatment?Yes. If I remember correctly, research shows that CBT has the highest success rate when it comes to treating depression and anxiety.
>>775854Yeah man, that is exactly who he should read when he has a problem with psycho babble and lack of scientific rigor…
>>775856Cock and ball torture it is then.
>>775856If CBT and ACT are scientifically rigorous, why are health """"professionals"""" even allowed to stray?
>>775937A.) just because it is has the best success rate on average does not make it ideal for each individual
B.) therapists can find it boring
>>775955Yeah they charge you a shit ton of money to act like your friend. Just get a friend for free.
>>775959And on legality - psychologists can at any point share personal information over safety concerns which is entirely subjective.
>>775959My therapist is covered by Medicaid
>>775962That gets me thinking instead of government mandated gfs it should be government mandated friends and the government pays for them.
>>775959what if its friends that you want to complain about?
This thread is stupid. Everyone should have a therapist.
>>775965Ok your choice of course
>>775968If I had to complain about friends I'd rather just find better friends than hang out with people who make me go to a therapist to complain about them lmao
i think im too cynical for this bullshit. if you go to a doctor with a cough he wont ask you about your childhood, he will give you drugs that fixes the issue, so why cant therapy be the same? uygha just give me some medication and lets stop wasting our time
>>775935talk therapy has years of research showing its effective in treating neurosis and depression. The mainline marxist take is that more modern approaches to psychology that bill themselves as scientific are often not but that's a separate discussion.
>>775965>Everyone should have a therapist.Unironically true. While there is obviously plenty to criticise concerning the current state of psychiatry, blanked rejection just carries water for further dismantling of healthcare that is already unavailable to many. Therapists for everyone should be part of socialist platform. Along with
>>775935, it is legitimately insane there are all these substances that provably help with mental illnesses, that are banned for literally no other reason than upper class reactionaries not wanting poors to have fun.
>>775970Because coughing usually has physiological cause. If you keep coughing as some kind of tic instead, you would need to visit a psychologist to get you to stop.
>>775970I've been on medication my entire adult life, and finally my psychiatrist told me that I need therapy. I've been through a major depressive episode that lasted 3 years, I ghosted everyone and rotted in bed. I was afraid my legs legitimately atrophied. It was nice when I came back and all my friends welcomed me back with open arms.
