I bought a Dell latitude 7400 for about $250 and pumped it full of ram. It's running void with like 48 gigs of ram. It's mostly a testtop for projects before I put them on my main system, do I haven't tried to play any games on it.

Some other specifications i’m looking for are relatively light, and relatively modern; it’s not gonna be a gaming laptop but i’d still like to play some older games on it (e.g. civ 5, hoi4, morrowind, etc)

Yeah no afaik linux doesn't work that well with mobile chips. Might as well just grab a refurbished thinkpad
