Theres sometbing to be said about suffering.
Its not a virtue.
Its just series of bad things that people are forced to put up with.
People who try to moralize suffering as good for personal growth are obnoxious out of touch boomers whom are self absorbed in their own life stories.
They either never suffered or had alot of help.
I cannot and will not ever subsvribe to anti comfort philsophy that turns suffering into a honorable thing.
The biggest cucks in life are those who glorify suffering.
Theyre just sore losers who secretly seethe at their more prsoperous peers.
Gloomy Ascetics and Decadent Hedonists both suffer, the former by depriving themselves of their own needs, in the name of toughening up, the latter by oversupplying themselves with life's joys until they develop a hyper-tolerance for pleasure, and nothing can bring them pleasure anymore. In fact, the gloomy ascetic is merely the reaction to the decadent hedonist, because the gloomy ascetic imagines that he can develop a tolerance to pain the way the hedonist develops a tolerance for pleasure, to the point that he will no longer feel pain, the way the hedonist no longer feels pleasure.
As for whether suffering is a virtue, it is not a virtue in and of itself. If I stepped out of this room and into the kitchen right now, and stabbed a knife through my hand, that would not be virtuous. However, if I took on tasks normally performed by a loved one, because they have too much on their plate, that is virtuous, not because I am suffering, but because I am decreasing someone else's suffering.

To a great extent yes, I think they can be out of touch. I think what happens is the human brain has a tendency to feel nostalgic for the past, and to feel proud of suffering that is in the past. You "made it" past a tough spot in your life, while others did not, so you call that "character building" and feel pride. The opposite tendency is survivor's guilt, where a person feels needlessly guilty for everything they "make it" through. There is an extent however to which exercise, dieting, studying, and other acts of personal discipline are rewarding, and will make you stronger, smarter, healthier. I think that is the middle ground between the "out of touch boomer" idea and the total rejection of any discipline or growth whatsoever.

Well I see a lot of prosperous people also glorify suffering. In the United States you have millionaire evangelical protestant preachers pushing the idea of the "prosperity gospel."
Learn to distinguish between suffering for suffering's sake, and actual discipline which leads to growth.
>>776810Big if true. Personally I always hated the idea that life would be boring if you were always happy and I'm generally a miserable person.
>>776810I don't need genetically engineered bliss, I have weed for that. I just need genetically engineered lucid dream mastery so that I can skip the video games and VR and move right to the final frontier of hedonistic stimulation.
>>776810There is so much media and philosophy about why this is a bad idea. Happiness comes from activity it is not merely passive pleasure, this is self-evident to everyone who isn't 12 years old.
