"Race" as something objective and material, existing outside human thought, is obviously not real. But phenotypes are real, both in material terms, and in the sense that humans are heavily affected it.
When people talk about race, 99% of the time they are talking about phenotypes, and 90% of the time they are taking about outwardly visible physical appearance.

So phenotypes are essentially what people mean by race. Therefore race IS phenotypes. It doesn't matter to people the technically correct fact that all humans share 99% of DNA. It doesn't matter to people that there is more genetic diversity in Africa than in the rest of the world combined. What matters to people are phenotypes, and we can't wish away or downplay phenotypes just because we want people to stop caring about them.
