What the fuck is the point of reading books when you can just read summaries and basically get the gist of it, and then if you talk about it with people who have read the book they can't even clock that you haven't.
I've never read a full book on any of the shit I opine on and often wonder what might be in them to warrant ~300 pages of text like how do you fill an entire book with sentences for a simple concept that can be explained in a few paragraphs

OP this is a really dumb question nb

tell me some of the books you've done this with

If you consume any piece of media (not just books), not to experience the media itself, but to be "in on the conversation" on that piece of media, you deserve to be flayed alive on live television.

>>788664
Anon, if you were gonna flay someone alive on live TV, what would you wear?

>>788660
If it's theory you should read the book to get the reasoning

>>788664
I only consume commentaries on existing media

Original media is too burdened with the necessity of elaborating & defining itself against a world that has not yet incorporated it into its symbolic order.
Instead you can just read the pre-digested symbols, and basically get it

summaries give you the general
the rest gives you specifics
sometimes there are aspects of specifics that are lost in the general

>>788660
Y'all are being trolled into bumping this dumb thread nb

i did this once but a guy who actually read the book humiliated me in front of everyone, i got so mad i genuinely started screaming from the top of my lungs like a chimp, just primatemaxxed and everyone got scared LMAO

The issue with a summary is that you're relying on somebody else to interpret it for you. You might read a summary and compare it with the actual book only to find that whoever summarized it totally misunderstood it.

  1. If you wanna write your own stories, then seeing the text in it's verbose is useful as that's what you're trying to make
  2. Technical writing is it's own summary, attempting to further summarize it loses technical detail.

I'd probably dress up like Severian.

a lot of books are full of dogshit and padded out and are not written as succinctly as possible to get the point across

Yeah, entertainment books and technical writing are a good case for reading books

Most philosophy, though, is 300 pages of cope to ultimately arrive at an arbitrary position on questions such as "is there one thing or multiple things" or "should we kill ourselves or what"

I guess the gambit is that their "system" will become the new hegemonic language of reasoning, so they want to provide a toolbox or some shit

Worst case is kant, turgid writing + complete irrelevancy today (you're either a hegeloid or a nietzschcel)

I have read some books in the what is widely considered the worst genre: utopian novels. And so, with knowledge and conviction, I can say that OP is right at least in respect to those. Just write an essay, people!

It depends.
Science books shouldn’t be reduced to summaries.
A lot of basic fiction stories on the other hand

You are basically telling on yourself. What you are saying is that a paragraph of an "executive summary" is enough to convince you that something is right or wrong. You don't need through literature surveys, detailed descriptions of the results, comparative analysis or anything else. It's sad.
